Will the Internet be the end of the local ADULT XXX STORE?

I drove past an old stopping grounds of mine today. Excitement Video, a Traditional Adult Book Store, the parking lot looked empty. I remember when the place was jammed with customers. I use to be a good regular customer, but I haven't been in the place for two years. I was wondering how many loyal Porn Heads like you guys and myself the Local Adult Video store have lost to the Internet?

I'm not talking about mom and pop places, I'm talking about heavy hitters, Adult XXX Mega Stores. For me the just cost savings and selection was a major factor, plus PU/The Best Porn sites. Drving back and forth was a hassel and driving to return DVD's was a huge waste of time plus I can imagine today the gas savings.

So I ask, has the day of the Adult Book Store going to fade away just like the JO seedy movie theathers which we all where in, maybe unless your a young buck, (Khan knows what I'm talking about), might become a thing of the past?

Oh, I got. Who remembers the Old Condom Machines with rubbers hanging on the walls of mens rooms? They fell to the past too. Now you buy your, 'Strippers' as my Gradfather calls rubbers/condoms next to the check out counter. How Times Change....

How we all will miss the neon light that says

'ADULT BOOK STORE' Will

I understand your concerns about internet possibly ending the adult book store, but I have to admit that I have a friend who owns a store here in Ohio and he says that his sales have never been better.

Some people like to collect that tangible item, and therefore, I think that it will still be around for a long time.

The internet isn't killing Adult Book Stores. The reality is that most, if not all printed material is becoming an endangered species. The cost of raw materials and the printing make it less affordable each day. Once upon a time, in the not so distant past, you had dime store novels. You don't hear that expression any more except in old movies. That said I agree with jackbdirty that people will probaly always want the feel of a book. What you might see is book stores(adult or otherwise) that cater to collectors. Long live the Brown Coats.

Want to look at how down-at-the-heels adult bookstores are? Read the press releases of Digital Playground where they write with glee about how porn fans are willing to pay premium prices for blu-ray and such things and how they encourage retailers not to do much discounting.

I don't go to the places and haven't bought any porn DVD's in about 1 year and have no plans to do so in the future, but other people are. For me, I'm happy with the quality that I get online.

I do think it is the porn sites that will close your adult book/video stores. But now you can order these videos from sites that are well stocked with any XXX video you desire and at lower prices. They even offer discounts for repeat users. Most store I know are priced higher and can not stock the large numbers of titles available. You may have to wait a couple of weeks, but that is better than not finding the video you want and having the sore backorder it.

The internet has invaded many retailers with this availability. It isn't only porn that is effected. Warning Will Robinson

I don't think the internet is killing adult bookstores as much as hypocritical politicians. My hometown only has one left that has peep shows and it has to be closed between midnight and noon and they had to take the doors off the booths and have them faced so they can be seen from the counter!

The other thing that always strikes me is how expensive the DVD's are. Forty and fifty bucks for some. When you can get a good site membership for two months for that kind of money, why would you take the chance on a video you haven't seen.

I hope they don't go away though. I go to them as much as a married man can. There is something exiting about the smell of rubber sex toys, magazines and knowing that the people around you are buying stuff to jack off to.

I started collecting porn in the late 1980's, mainly magazines.

The store I used closed down years ago and is now just a desserted building covered in spay paint "art".

I started collection internet porn at the start of 2006 and havent purchased a mag or dvd since then. But the top shelf at my local newsagents is well stocked, so somebody still buys them.

The same is true for electronic goods. I havent set foot into a high street store to buy anything like that for about 4 years. The stores just cant match internet prices.

I read a comment by somebody on here a few days ago saying he had never read a playboy mag :-O just started directly with internet porn.

When I think about how much money I spent on magazines over the years it makes me :-(

ByteMaster's comments echo my situation almost exactly. I dropped into my local store just for grins and was totally turned off. Yes they rented DVD's now not VHS tapes but they nor want $3.00 a pop per video, and the DVDs cannot be copied.

The internet is far less expensive and far more convenient!

Man I remember paying $20 or more for some of the magazines back in the early 90's. Sad to think how much coin I wasted on that stuff that I don't even have any more. Honestly, who has actually kept any of their mags from the pre internet days?

Just a few that have some over the counter stuff that one can no longer obtain...just for nostalgia.

Candy Barr, for example, who, even by today's standards was absolutely one perfectly gorgeous babe. If she was born 45 years later she'd be a top star rather than a barely remembered Mafia moll.

I had the good fortune of sneaking into a NYC nudie theatre when I was 17 and going nutz watching her dance. Just one time but I still remember that experience.

I still go to adult bookstores and theatres when I have the opportunity. For those of you who have been in one of the darkened stores, you can't tell me that the internet has the same atmosphere. You also can't tell me that sitting in a room alone looking pics and watching videos has the same rush as sitting in a video booth listening to moans coming from other booths that you are not sure whether or not they are from other videos or the people watching them. I think that one day these places will not longer be profitable and will shutdown. That will be a sad day for me.

I like doing a lot of my surfing online, but I must say I still enjoy my trips to the local stores. I like to see the newest dvd's in my hands, as well as checking out the newest toys and such. Just feels more exciting to me at times. So I don't think the stores will go away, at least I hope not!!!

Going to the adult book store was always a risky proposition back in the day. You could be seen by someone you know and suffer through the inevitable embarrasment. It was also expensive - those magazines, like the hardcore Puritan type, were not cheap. Then, of course, there was the hassle factor. You had to actually make an effort to get to the materials, ie. drive there.

These days, you can see absolutely anything (within reason) that you want to online. You don't risk being seen by someone from work. Also, it is hugely convenient because it's much easier to get online than it is to drive to a brick & mortar store.

But, of course, the real advantage of the PC versus the brick & mortar store is that you can do a lot of versatile things with an electronic file. If you download a movie from your favorite site, you can watch it on your PC, you can transfer it to a DVR and watch it on your big screen TV, or you can even convert the file to an MPEG 4 and watch it on your iPod Touch! The file is yours and you can take it with you to watch whenever and wherever you want.

The convenience factor is definitely going to bring down the old Adult Book/Video Store. The Dude

Since this thread I noticed many have turned to online sales and websites. Many ADULT stores have now set up shipping and even on Ebay.
The ones I see hit hard are mom and pop video stores with Porn. Many took a risk to put smut in their inventory and are paying the price as ppl stopped taking their kids into stores that had that ROOM, of porn.
So many are turning to online sales from these stores. Since 2007

At the rate you're bringing back these threads from the dead we're going to start calling you CyberZombie or ZombieToad soon. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Just picture Cybertoad as Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein, yelling, "Alive! It's alive! It's alive!" Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

There may always be a place for the so called mom and pop adult stores. Some customers will always prefer paying cash fo it so that makes online purchasing impossible and many of these adult stores can offer articles that are harder to buy online. I wonder if that would be possible but if it was and they had the cash then they could be some Real Dolls. You could make some serious money with that. Long live the Brown Coats.

Lol! That's a hilarious movie, and Teri Garr looked...wow!

- Dr. Frankenstein's Fiance: "Excuse me, darling, what exactly is it that you...do do?"
- Inga (Teri Garr): (pausing) "Uh, well, I...assist Dr. Frankenstein in the laboratory. We have intellectual discussions und we--in fact we were just having one as you were driving--"
- Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder): "But I! Uh..."
- Inga: "What?"
- Dr.: "Igor, would you give me a hand with the bags?"
- Igor: "Certainly, you take the blonde, and I'll take the one in the turban! Woof! Woof!"
- Dr.: "Stop that! I was talking about the luggage."
- Igor: "Yes, master." "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Rippper, Dr. Stranglove

I remember going into this one particular convenient store which had that shanrgrila in the back, a magazine rack with the goods. Number one, I almost always had to be drunk in order to go. I'd call a cab at one in the morning just to get a few mags. Usually there'd be a guy at the register, but sometimes there was a woman. When it was a woman it was very difficult. No eye-contact. And I always had to buy other stuff. A six pack of cola, some chips, I'll take this little flashlight, and the porn. Tender cash with shaky hands, slip back into the cab with the sensation of having pulled off something daring and yet pathetic.

There was always the smell of coffee when I went into that store. To this very day, the smell of coffee brewing in certain public places will make me think of shiny magazines and bare skin. Internet porn, though vastly cheaper and easier to obtain, just doesn't have that kick. You know what I hate the most about selfish people? It's that they don't think enough about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

I'm enjoying it. Some of the older threads are still as interesting as ever and remind me of the diversity of interests on PU.

The local bookstores here in the Bay Area serve to function more for hooking-up and quickies

Also, paraphernalia is readily available vis a vis the sloth-like post office.

hmmm mabye the stores can change them to online shops? Like this one [non-English site example deleted]. I think this will be more successful because nowadays internet is part of our daily routine. Edited by Staff on Jun 25, 2010, 05:08am (Khan: removed link to non-English online porn shop)

I don't think adult stores will close think they will just adapt and change (and those that don't will close).

The real XXX stores movies are very expensive 40+ while the same movies can be order from sites like blissbox for half the price. Also there's always the atmosphere seedy.

Look at shops like ann summers, Agent provocateur etc, sexy, fashionable (and in the case of ann summers reasonabley priced), and very female friendly. The only thing missing is the truely adult dvd's.
I like the new thing in ann summers changing rooms that the door has a 'peep' hole so the girl changing can let (if she wants) her partner look in without showing everyone.

Also condom machines disappearing from mens rooms? not that i've noticed, if anything they're adding new things like disposable toothbrushes and such like beside the condom machines.

I no longer visit these stores myself but I believe they will always have a place.

To kind of pick up on what picdude is saying, starting in early 2000's most of the major adult megastores began slowly shifting there focus away from the hardcore collector/user toward more of a couples focus.

At the big Mega-store here in Orlando, I remember seeing less and less space devoted to VHS and DVD rentals and more space being devoted to adult toys and high end DVD purchases (I think DVD purchases rather than rentals were aimed at couples), lingerie sales etc.

I remember being very frustrated with this at the time(even though I knew why it was occurring). The truth is (the online threat aside)I think the couples market was always more lucrative for those stores able to take advantage of it.

The average couple (particularly wealthy couples) are often likely to come in to an adult mega store and drop down about $300.00 without even thinking about it. Meanwhile your average Joe renting DVD's will take many many trips to yield the same amount of sales.

The stores that are dying out are the ones who don't have the space and location to cater to couples. Space is key because couples (often coming off a night on the town) don't want to stop by some hole in the wall to shop for lingerie and DVD's. They want a place that is spacious, well lit and well decorated. (One of the stores in Orlando for instance is two stories tall and quite spacious).

Location is also somewhat important because as someone mentioned even couples don't necessarily want to be seen leaving an adult store, no matter how nice the store looks (or how mainstream porn has become). Again as an example the Mega-store I mentioned here in Orlando is located very close to an industrial zone that is not heavily trafficked.
