Tech question: Movies bigger when burning?

I joined a site that had very small movies. In total it was like 4 Gb. So I thought I could burn that whole site to 1 DVD. To my surprise, adding just one 40 Mb movie, my burnprogram says it's 380 Mb's. So now I need like 5 DVD's for all.
I checked 2 different burnprograms and both do it that way.
Anyone know what's going on and how to fix that?

I have too possible explanations:

The first is did you possibly put a CD in the drive and load up the software telling it that it is burning to a DVD? 40 Megabytes is about 6% of the total of a 700 Megabyte CD. So perhaps it is just showing the percentage as if it where a DVD - though the math puts that 380 Megabytes a bit high.

Second and more likely, I think, is that program is showing the file in Megabits (Mb), not Megabytes (MB). 380 Megabits equals 47.5 Megabytes. This stems from one byte equaling 8 bits. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Sounds like there's some re-encoding going on. If you are creating a data DVD, 4Gb of videos in your HD should be 4Gb in a data DVD.

But if you are creating a video DVD (one that is conforming to the DVD-video standard), in your case there's an unneeded re-encoding that may be the explanation for the increase. It should be around 30-50 Mbytes per minute so if your originals are in the 5-10 minutes range that could explain the new size.

No more DVDs for me. I switched to external HDs a long time ago.

Ah yes, good point, if the programs were converting the videos into DVD MPEG Video, that would certainly account for the boost in file size. I assumed the programs were setup for burning Data DVDs. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Ok, so I should look for a proper DVD-burn program then.

And as for external HD's. The only reason I want them on DVD is so that I can watch it on my big screen tv.

Keep in mind, though, that unless your standalone DVD player supports reading data DVDs you may have no option but creating DVD-videos; whatever software you use, you will be stuck with the much bigger files.

If you want to watch videos on the TV, another thing you may want to explore is multimedia HDs: a HD that you can plug directly into your TV. Make sure to check the supported formats carefully so the ones you want to watch are OK.

Your burn program converts the video file before burning it.

The best thing I can think of at this point is that you have it set to create a video that will actually work in most dvd players. You need to set your program up for a data disk, not video. I do not know what you are using to burn the disks, but I do know that Nero does a decent job and would solve this issue for you. I am sure that one of you buddies would have a copy of it. A OEm version comes with practically all dvd writers now. I tried Nero but it constantly crashes. Perhaps because my pc isn't the newest.
In a few weeks, I will get a new pc (fast dual core, 4Gb ram, 1Gb video) so I guess I will try it then.

Nero chews up ram.

I like CDBurnerXP:
http://cdburnerxp.se/
Have used it a lot and never had a problem. However, it is likely that your burning program is set on "VIDEO DVD/VCD" mode which re-encodes video for DVD players. If you want to leave the videos the way they are (playable only on computers) then you need to make sure the burning program is in "DATA CD/DVD" mode. That will prevent the program from re-encoding videos.

Thanks I'll try that program. I can't even count the number of different programs I tried. Most give me problems. Can't wait for my new pc...

I looked at this one: Freecom

But I wonder how does this look like on your tv? Does it show folders or do the movies just start playing one after the other at the moment you turn on this device?

The multimedia HDs I knew about are all-in-one appliances. They show a very simple menu on the TV where you can move around the folder structure and choose which movie to play.

Looks like the one you have found is an adapter between any HD and your TV. I didn't know such things existed. A multimedia HD has this device built into a regular external HD case.

On the page you linked there's a "Product demo movie" aka youtube video and it looks live they have a pretty cool menu similar to the ones I knew about. A cheap alternative even though somewhat bulkier than a true multimedia HD :)

Just remember to double check the specs: video formats supported and possible requirements for HD file system. It might not be the case here but you can only format some multimedia HDs as FAT32; otherwise, they won't work when plugged to your TV and you are only able to use them as an external HD until you reformat them to FAT32.

Thanks for the info! I think I'm going to like this toy. Finally be able to watch the HD movies on tv cause they were too big to fit on a dvd.

I will agree that Nero takes resources to run, but I have found it to do a decent job. I do not have to throw many disks at people. I have personally been using Nero for about 8 years or so.

I checked out that media drive. Look interesting, but expensive! There are cheaper ways of doing that and that allow you to use your entire PC as storage. Ok, I have a problem. I got that device, but it only reads avi and mpeg. The WMV files (which are the majority) doesn't even show up on the screen.

I downloaded a few converters but when converting to avi, the image quality lowers quite a bit. And when converting to mpeg, the movie doesn't even work anymore.

Can anyone help?

This might do the trick:

AVS Video Converter

$59 for a lifetime Registration Key to all of their software - which is pretty serious suite of products. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Thanks! That program converted with not much quality loss.
I'll get a new pc soon and I doubt the registration will work on 2 different pc's. So I'll need to wait a bit to buy it.

Glad it worked! I'd email them to double check, but usually Lifetime Registrations are for your lifetime - not your computer's. So you should be able to install it on the new computer and register it again. They just don't want you running the programs on two computers at once. Most shareware companies hope you follow that policy on the "honor system" basically. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"
