I haven't joined BB in about a year but even then I treated it as a minefield and I'd still do that when I rejoin in the future. I can't see any reason why they would have changed their practices. If you opt to join (and it is mostly safe to do that if you go in with your eyes open) find out what sites you have access to (the TBP page here will tell you that) and ONLY go to those sites. Do not consider any of the links to other sites as taking you to a preview. If you really want to protect yourself use a pre-paid or reloadable card with just enough to cover the basic membership so if you do click on a link and they try to charge you it will be declined.
Finally, if you do willingly click on a link with the idea of joining be aware that any add-ons have to be cancelled separately. Don't just cancel your main membership because you'll end up with a recurring charge on the add-on. (A pre-paid card with a limited balance will solve this problem too.)
Good luck! Let us know how you make out and post a review or comments on the site. It's unfortunate that BB relies on such sketchy business practices because it is a great site.

I definitely agree with your premise that the small number of us who do actually pay for porn should be treated like royalty. BB is among the worst in that their sites are like minefields in that one wrong click suddenly can land you with an unintended membership. When I occasionally join BB I use a pre-paid card with just enough balance on it to pay for the main membership to block any attempts to bill me for more.

Agreed. I have to figure out a payment method other than a credit card. I'm looking at pre-paid cards but I've had trouble with those before.
Then again, for as little as I trust Bang Bros, my issue with them has never been billing. It's their use of links that automatically generate a membership and a charge.

I have to weigh in and say that this is one of the most informative reviews I've read in a long time. Admittedly, I've been thinking of taking the Bang Bros plunge again (I haven't been a member there for a few years because of their shady billing practices) and your review is really helpful.
Bang Bros is likely the one site that many of us would name where the site itself is excellent but the experience can be seriously dampened by the tactics the site uses to get more money from users without them even knowing.
Your tips in avoiding at least some of their crap will be useful for all readers.

I haven't joined Kink in close to a year but I never had any issues with cancelling. I hope this was just a glitch and they've got that fixed. Difficulty cancelling is a sign that a site is getting a bit shady in my opinion.
I have a friend who had to cancel a credit card to get Bang Bros recurring billing to stop.

I will never understand why Bang Bros uses these shady tactics. They have a decent site, some great porn and they offer a great value for members. But like you I'm always amazed at the lengths they go to to swindle their paying members. I've learned to treat their webpage like a minefield, making sure to only click on those scenes that I know are part of what I paid for. And how did I learn that this is necessary? By getting burned. The worst thing that happened was that I once opened an email offer from them and clicked on the link to have a look at a new site they had. Or so I thought. That one click to open the link caused me to become a member because they had my credit card info on file.
Grrrr...
What bugs me most is that THEY DON'T NEED TO DO THIS TO MAKE MONEY!!!

It always baffles me why a site like this has to stoop to such shady practices. As you've probably read in other comments you aren't the first PU member to be burned by BB. I got burned too - twice. I do still join the site but I treat it like a minefield as one errant click of your mouse and you end up with additional charges. BB has some excellent porn so it makes me wonder what they hope to gain by pissing of customers.
Just a warning - don't click on any links in any promotional emails you get from them. If they have your credit card information - surprise! - you just joined. The sender for their emails that I get is "Support." Support, my ass...

And welcome to the VERY large club of people here who have been scammed by BB. I've said this many times before, but BB is like a minefield: you really need to be careful about where you click because one wrong click can literally cost you. I've also said this many times: BB is a great porn site that could be very successful without all the bullshit they use. It seems to me like they actually want to run scams rather than just run an honest site.
I rejoin occasionally, but I've learned how to step carefully to avoid what you're going through. But on my first time in I got scammed the exact same way you just did.

Been there, done that, and I don't mean that with even a hint of sarcasm. I'll never understand why BB feels the need to screw customers over like this. You read the comments here and it's complaint after complaint of shady practices. I rejoin BB occasionally but I am always careful when I'm a member. As you learned, clicking on a thumbnail may get you a new membership - and one that's hard to cancel.
Don't give up on sites with no independent biller though. 90% of the time that's a good rule to follow but there are some great sites out there that don't have an independent biller that are still honest and easy to cancel. The PU reviews and comments will usually call out shady practices. German Goo Girls is a good example, except that they do have a biller but it happens to be a corrupt one.

I think your comment pretty much sums up how most of us here feel about this network. What bugs me is that they don't need to do it. They have a great product at a decent price and I'm sure they'd have a lot of long-term and recurring members if they treated customers with more respect. I've joined several times in the past and likely will again, but I tip-toe through the site as if it was a minefield to avoid triggering an extra cost.

Great review.
I'm glad that you pointed out their shady tactics for joining the add-on sites. Whenever I have a membership there now I always tread carefully and makes sure I don't click on any link that I'm not sure about. Like you, I learned about their dirty tricks the hard way. And also like you, I found their cancellation process to be deceptive. I had it happen once that they didn't even give the option to cancel an add-on site. That took some work to get that cancelled and I suspect that a lot of people don't realize that the add-ons need to be cancelled separately. It's a great site but their shady tactics with members needs to change.

I'm not really all that calm any longer. I went to the site and I see they have only a handful of videos. I'm pissed, but I suspect that the grief I'll go through to get a refund won't be worth it. I'll download what they have and chalk it up to experience.

I agree that the upsells are what causes the site to lose a lot of credibility. But the baffling thing is that they don't need the upsells. They have an incredibly good product that sells itself. And the problem that many report with the upsells is that you don't even get a warning that you're heading into extra-cost territory. I didn't experience that. The one add-on I did buy was clearly an extra cost.

It seems telling that everyone here has either a positive or negative experience with BB. There is no one who seems to just a have a middle-of-the-road experience. And those who have had problems all link them back to billing issues. I shouldn't get too comfortable though, I will have to keep an eye on my credit card for the next while.
Latina Rampage does exist. I'm fairly sure it's part of the basic membership but I can't be 100% sure because I can't separate out the "SuperPack" that I added on. Latina Rampage has 114 scenes but the last one they added was in January 2012 so it is one of the sites that isn't updating.

Bangbros seems to be the most polarizing of the mega sites that gets reviewed here, and it doesn’t really have to be that way. The sites included with the basic network are large, many (but not all) are updating regularly and all offer some great porn. But working against BB is the perception of misleading signups and shady billing practices. It seems unreasonable to me that BB isn’t aware of these concerns since the misleading signups are obviously a choice they made (and the billing flows from that) and if they are aware of the concerns, it baffles me why a site of this calibre would continue to do that.
BB really needs no introduction, but I’ll add a quick one in case someone has just discovered internet porn. BB is a large network of sites, which isn’t unique, that offers sites catering to just about any niche a member could be interested in. Anal? Lesbian? Big breasts? Reality? Glory Holes? They’re all here. What sets BB apart from most other mega-sites is that (at least in all the niches I downloaded) they are done really well. So many other mega-sites have a feel of a low-cost buffet where your appetite will be sated but you won’t rave about the quality. In the niches I viewed I was pleasantly surprised to see that just because the network covers so many niches that they still seem to be able to understand what makes good porn within a specific niche. For example, I love both anal sites and glory hole sites and the BB sites Mr. Anal and Glory Hole Loads are among the best of each niche that I’ve seen. Each could easily be a stand-alone site and still have value. I have every reason to believe that the same thing applies to the niche sites that I’m not interested in.
The other great thing about BB is that they offer models from a range of ages, body types and ethnicities. The models also range from A-listers to relatively unknowns.
I’m going to break with my own convention of providing a lot of detail in a review because I don’t want to risk misleading anyone. The reason for this is that I added an optional “SuperPack” of sites that appears in the scenes available to me. To give the number of scenes available would include those and mislead someone who buys the basic membership. But don’t let me mislead anyone in the other direction either: the basic membership includes thousands of scenes. For a first-timer or a recurring member there is real value here.
The site started adding HD videos in January 2009. Prior to that the videos were available in WMV (852x480, 1500kb/s), and MP4 (720x404, 1000kb/s and 852x480, 1500kb/s). The HD videos are in MP4 and come in at 1280X720 at 3000kb/s. Those aren’t the best the industry has to offer, but they look good on both a monitor and a 50” TV.
The network is logically laid out and has a search function and also uses tags. I can’t speak for the effectiveness of those, as I’ll explain.
Perhaps the biggest issue with the network is their apparent use of misleading upgrades. Many PU members have reported that all they have done is click on a thumbnail and ended up joining something that they didn’t intend to join – and being billed for it. I have good reason to think that this is an accurate description of what can happen, so in the interests of providing a public service I’ll make four recommendations:
• If you only subscribed to the main network, when you go to the main page ONLY click on the link to the “Bang Bros Pack.” That’s what you bought and paid for. Clicking on any other link MAY cause you to join that site.
• When you’re in the BB Pack that you bought, be extra careful about using the search function and tags as these MAY bring you scenes in a site outside your pack. Opening that scene MAY cause you to be signed up.
• Keep your joining email – it will provide you a link to a site where you can cancel. (This worked for the main network for me, but I did need more effort to cancel the add-on even though I had the right link.)
• If you don’t want to be rebilled plan to cancel a bit earlier than usual in case you have problems. Your membership will still be active until the end of the subscription – at least it was for me. (I should also add that even though I had problems cancelling the add-on it was quick and effective.)
One other minor issue is that while download managers seem to be permitted, the short life of the links make it impossible to use a manager to queue downloads. Links die after 2-3 minutes, so even with a fast speed (I saw 11MB/s regularly) queuing more than two HD scenes wasn’t worth it.
So would I recommend this site? Absolutely. They are among the best – and maybe the best – mega-site on the internet today. They offer something for all but the most extreme tastes, and what they offer is top-quality. The website is logically laid out and easy to use. My bottom line with BB is much like it would be for a lot of sexual activities: have fun, but go in with your eyes open and use protection. |
