^In the meantime. I recommend that if you would like to see a lot more of Alice then take a look at Crossing Over. She has a couple of nude scenes in the movie. Long live the Brown Coats.

Good memory. I've seen Crossing Over. And I remember those scenes. The scenes weren't done for titillation. She was getting bonked by Ray Liotta, in exchange for a green card. And she felt like a piece of meat. Good acting, but a total turn-off. Her character thought Ray Liotta was slime, and her disgust was apparent. Edited on May 28, 2013, 12:00am

Will Smith's 'After Earth' Sputters Behind 'Fast 6' and 'Now You See Me'

Universal's hot-car sequel cruises to a repeat victory with $35M, with M. Night Shyamalan sci-fi film falling well below expectations

Published: June 02, 2013 @ 8:20 am

By Todd Cunningham

Will Smith’s dream of making son Jaden the new Fresh Prince of Hollywood is on hold for now.

“After Earth,” the sci-fi adventure movie he developed in hopes of handing over the action star reins to his 14-year-old, is the summer’s first major box-office misfire at the weekend box office.

It has taken in an estimated $27 million since opening Friday, well below industry expectations and “Fast and Furious 6,” which repeated as champ with roughly $35 million. The weekend’s other wide opener, the magic-themed heist thriller “Now You See Me," was a pleasant surprise runner-up with $28 million, about $10 million above analysts’ pre-release projections.

The M. Night Shyamalan-directed “After Earth,” in which the father and son play space travelers stranded on Earth 1,000 years after humanity has left, had been expected to challenge “Fast and Furious 6” for No. 1 this weekend. But coupled with blistering reviews, weak word of mouth and a hefty $130 million production budget, the limp launch adds up to a letdown for Sony and Smith's Overbrook Entertainment.

Will Smith, a rap star who became Hollywood royalty in TV's "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" before moving over to film, has a much smaller part in "After Earth" than his progeny, and "After Earth" was envisioned as a trilogy. It's a good bet plans for sequels are on hold now, however.

"After Earth" earned a so-so "B" CinemaScore from audiences, which were 51 percent male and 40 percent under 25 years of age. Sony would have liked to have seen the latter figure higher, but marketing the film primarily as an action adventure rather than one more aimed at kids may have complicated things.

Papa Smith has been in just one movie since 2008, last year’s “Men In Black 3.” He remains a box-office force internationally – “MIB 3” brought in $180 million in the U.S. and $445 million abroad -- and “After Earth” could do better when it rolls out abroad over the next few weeks. Jaden's last movie, the 2010 remake of "The Karate Kid," made $360 million worldwide. But that one opened to $55 million in the United States.

It was close for fourth, between Paramount and Skydance Production's "Star Trek Into Darkness" and Fox's animated family film "Epic," with both studios estimating weekends in the $16.4 million range. "The Hangover Part III" was just behind at $15.9 million, a 62 percent drop from its opening last week, giving it an $88 million domestic total after two weeks.

Universal’s cars-and-criminals sequel dropped 65 percent from its record Memorial Day weekend debut, a steep but standard fall for the films in the franchise, which have fallen off sharply from debut weeks in the past. The domestic total for "Fast 6" is now $170 million and it added an impressive $75 million in its second week of overseas release. That brings its worldwide total to more than $480 million, and it will easily be the franchise's biggest moneymaker.

"Now You See Me," which cost about $75 million to produce, is a big win for Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment. The PG-13 "Now You See Me" follows an FBI agent and Interpol detective tracking a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.

Audiences, which were very broad at 51 percent women and 52 percent under 30, gave it an "A-" CinemaScore. Directed by Louis Leterrier, the ensemble cast includes Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Morgan Freeman and Dave Franco.

Disney's blockbuster Marvel sequel "Iron Man 3" was seventh with $8 million, followed by "The Great Gatsby" at $6.2 million, "Mud" ($1.2 million) and "The Croods" ($615,000).

The overall box office was ahead of the comparable weekend last year for the second consecutive week. The roughly $155 million total is about half of the Memorial Day weekend's record four-day haul, but about 13 percent ahead of last year.

^The below review of After Earth best sums up my feeling in regards to it, it's stars and the director.

http://www.7mpictures.com/after-earth-movie-review/

I'm pretty sure that Will Smith told the studio that he would only do another MIB movie if they made this one. He did (the studios must be wishing he hadn't) and this will cost them plenty because they are going to lose so much money that it's not even funny. The entire movie is more or less a family thing, Will and Jayden star in it, Jada her brother Caleeb and Will are producers and Will was even credited with the story. That's good news for the Smith and Pinkett families because they are going to make a killing. Too bad the studio is the one who will have to flip the bill but that's what happens when you let a movie star (even a huge one like Smith) choose a project meant to promote his son.

If there was one movie that was almost doomed to failure this year then it's this one. The pros are that you have a sci/fi movie with an interesting premise, decent effects and you have Will Smith. The cons are that it's directed by a man who has not had a real hit in nearly a decade, the star of the movie is not Will but his 14 years old son(kids never do well in sci/fi movies), the effects aren't all that great, the writing is awful, the acting is not much better and the story has so many plot holes that you are really curious to know what the original story was suppose to be vs what you now have.

If anyone is really curious to know why humans left Earth then take a look at the below link. The site tries to explain it.

Warm Bodies, a cute zombie movie with Teresa Palmer, is out at Rebox.

Worth watching, if you haven't already seen it at a theater.

^I concur. Too bad the marketing was not as well done as it could have been and the movie did not make as much money at the box office as it should have. Hopefully the studios make a lot of profit with dvd and Blu-ray sales because this is the type of movies that I love to see. Long live the Brown Coats.

^ Warm Bodies received an 80% Fresh Tomato on Rotten Tomatoes website. When it was being released into theaters I saw the trailer several times on TV and while Zombie flicks are not normally my thing, it did seem to have a bit of humor displayed in said trailer.

I saw Warm Bodies in a movie theater. Was not disappointed. The movie had humor, intelligence, a fresh take on zombies (which are not my niche either), and Theresa Palmer, a girl most PU members could drool over (even if there weren't any nude scenes).

Rent it at Redbox for just over $1.

I'm not saying it's the greatest movie ever made, but I really enjoyed it.

And that trailer at YouTube gives a great sample of the flavor of the movie:

I saw Fast & Furious 6 yesterday.

It was good, lots of fast driving and explosions and whatnot.

But I liked Fast and Furious 5 better.

The plot (not a great plot, this series is not aimed at deep-thinkers) made more sense in #5.
I realize these are escapist movies, but the motivations of the characters are just fricking unbelievable. And these characters (Vin Diesel and his gang) are, in spite of being criminals, the most loyal, wonderful, kind, and generous people you could ever hope would be a part of your family. This is a family movie, where the virtues of family mean even more than in a Disney movie. Disney used to be about family type entertainment, but Fast and Furious 6 is the new version of family values with sex (implied, not shown), love, loyalty and cool thrown in.

I don't think you'll take comfort in this but maybe you can look on the bright side of things. You are at least going to be part of a very select group of people that saw this monstrosity on the big screen and this movie may now have destroyed the career of both Jaden as an actor and Will as a producer/writer because the studio will lose at least 100 millions on this turkey. I can already predict that it will be nominated for a few Razzis and that it will win a few of them as well. Long live the Brown Coats.

For $50, you can be the first person in your neighborhood to see World War Z, the Brad Pitt zombie movie opening this month.

You not only get to see the movie, in RealD 3D, you also get to keep a special pair of 3D glasses, plus a "World War Z" poster and a HD digital download of the film the day it becomes available on home video.

All this, and a small bag of popcorn to use while you are watching the movie.

What a great deal!

PS: Steven Spielberg said in a talk with George Lucas at USC that his movie Lincoln is only worth $7.

Maybe that why I haven't seen it yet. My movie theater charges more than $7, even with a senior discount and matinee prices.

I am waiting to watch Lincoln when it's free on cable.

I figure Spielberg (and George Lucas) have already taken enough of my money in the past.

Meet the $50 'World War Z' Movie Ticket: Here's What You Get
By Mark Deming | Movie Talk – 5 hours ago

World War Z, Brad Pitt

Watch out everyone! $50 movie tickets are coming! (Photo: Paramount Pictures)

How much would you pay to be the first person on your block to see "World War Z"? Paramount Pictures and Regal Cinemas are betting that zombie and/or Brad Pitt fans are willing to dig deep for the chance to see the big budget zombie epic a few days ahead of schedule, to the tune of $50.

A limited number of "mega tickets" have been devised for mega fans. Early screenings of "World War Z" will be held in five cities on June 19, two days before the movie opens wide. Ordinary early tickets for the pre-release screenings will be available for $16.50 ($14.00 for children), already a bit steep for a mid-week showing, but Paramount is also offering their super-sized version for the princely sum of $48.75, which tops off at an even $50 when the $1.25 service fee is included.

So what does that $50 get you? Well, the screening is in RealD 3D, and you'll receive a pair of special collectable custom 3D glasses (which you presumably won't be asked to recycle after the show). You'll also get a full-size copy of a limited edition "World War Z" poster and a HD digital download of the film the day it becomes available on home video.

And because they're staying classy, the promoters are even throwing in a bag of popcorn. Small size, of course — but what do you want for fifty bucks?

By the way, it looks like these guys got to see it for free!

The luxury-priced screenings of Brad Pitt's zombie invasion movie are happening in Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and, yes, also in San Diego (pronounced San Dee-yah-go to "Anchorman" fans).

The mega ticket screenings are the first of their kind, according to Paramount, suggesting that if enough people are willing to part with half a Benjamin for the privilege of seeing "World War Z" a few days early — and get some goodies thrown in — this could become a regular part of the launch cycle for event movies.

In an amusing coincidence, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas spoke at an event at the University of Southern California on Wednesday, where the veteran filmmakers offered dire predictions about the future of the movie industry as budget for potential blockbusters continue to grow.

"There's going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen mega-budget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that's going to change the paradigm," Spielberg said.

As a consequence, Spielberg said he expects a future where theaters and studios will maximize profits by charging more for major attractions. "You're gonna have to pay $25 for the next 'Iron Man,' you're probably only going to have to pay $7 to see 'Lincoln,'" Spielberg said.

Congratulations, Mr. Spielberg! In less than 48 hours, your prediction came true — and then some. Can we interest you in a poster and a small bag of popcorn?

I saw Man of Steel this afternoon and I was very pleased with it. There isn't much that I didn't enjoy about the movie. The main issues I have with are that it's a pretty dark and slightly depressing movie at times (this is not the upbeat slightly comedic Superman starring Christopher Reeve), the amount of destruction that the planet and the city of Metropolis receive is quite substantial but that is never really resolved (at least on screen) and too many of the action sequences are too fast for the eye to keep up with and it just becomes a big confusing mess. That last one I blame on CGI's. When directors had to rely on human being for their action sequences then you were limited to speeding up the film or serious editing.

I can't be the only person who enjoyed the movie because it has already made 125 million with just the domestic box office takes. I saw it in 3D but I don't think you have to see it in that format to appreciate all the amazing shots. Long live the Brown Coats.

I have no problem with parts of Metropolis being destroyed.
In fact, if half the population of Metropolis was destroyed, the United States would probably be a safer, friendlier nation.
I am really tired of the West Coast, or Los Angeles, being destroyed in so many movies.

And the people of Metropolis, or New York, are some of the rudest, most self-centered, conniving citizens in the United States.

New York, remember, is where Wall Street operates. And you don't get criminals any bigger than what you find on Wall Street. The people who rob banks are pikers compared to what some of the Wall Street players can make in a single year.

^In that case you should be thrilled with MOS because the heart of Metropolis gets completely annihilated in the movie while the West Coast gets nothing. Sadly part of a small Kansas town does get bitch slapped. Long live the Brown Coats.

Actor James Gandolfini dead at age 51
By Chelsea J. Carter and JD Cargill, CNN
updated 9:41 AM EDT, Thu June 20, 2013

HBO: Actor James Gandolfini has died

(CNN) -- James Gandolfini, best known for his role as an anxiety-ridden mob boss on HBO's "The Sopranos," died Wednesday while on vacation in Italy. He was 51.

The exact cause of death is not known, but his managers said it was possibly a heart attack.

His body is in a hospital morgue in Rome. Once the U.S. Embassy issues a death certificate, Gandolfini's remains can be returned to the United States.

"It is with immense sorrow that we report our client, James Gandolfini, passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy," managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders said in a joint statement. "Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving."

The actor had been scheduled to make an appearance at the Taormina Film Fest in Sicily this week.

Gandolfini won three Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Tony Soprano, the angst-wracked mob boss who visited a therapist and took Prozac while knocking off people. "The Sopranos" aired from 1999 to 2007.

Edie Falco, the actress who played Tony's wife Carmela, said she was "shocked and devastated" by the news.

"He was a man of tremendous depth and sensitivity, with a kindness and generosity beyond words. I consider myself very lucky to have spent 10 years as his close colleague. My heart goes out to his family," Falco said in a statement Thursday. "The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I've ever known."

"Jimmy was the spiritual core of our Sopranos family, and I am stunned at this devastating loss," said Chris Albrecht, the former president of HBO who gave the green light to the show. "He was a great talent, but an even better man. My thoughts are with his family."

HBO is owned by TimeWarner, which is also CNN's parent company.

Actor Steve Van Zandt, who played Tony Soprano's confidant Silvio Dante, felt equally close to Gandolfini in real life. "I have lost a brother and a best friend," he posted on Twitter. "The world has lost one of the greatest actors of all time."

Gandolfini was born September 18, 1961, in Westwood, New Jersey, according to Biography.com.

He graduated from Rutgers University and, as the story goes, worked as a bartender and a bouncer in New York City until he went with a friend to an acting class.

He got his start on Broadway, with a role in the 1992 revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire" with Jessica Lange and Alec Baldwin.

Entertainers, politicians mourn Gandolfini

Gandolfini's big screen debut came in the role of a heavy in the bloody "True Romance" in 1993.

His breakthrough on the small screen came in 1999 with the role of Tony Soprano.

"He was a genius. Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that," David Chase, who developed "The Sopranos," said in a statement. "...A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes."

Gandolfini, who was notoriously press shy, had a reputation in the tabloids for being sometimes difficult.

"He wasn't easy sometimes. But he was my partner, he was my brother in ways I can't explain and never will be able to explain," Chase said.

While Gandolfini was known for sometimes ruthless, often imposing characters, those who worked with him described an actor who put his heart into a role.

"He was just so good at the emotion. A very passionate man and a very, very tender man," Matthew Warchus, who directed Gandolfini in the 2009 Broadway play "God of Carnage," told CNN. "I really loved him and admired him a great deal."

Larry King, who saw Gandolfini in Las Vegas just weeks ago, told CNN the actor was "jovial and seemed happy."

"He stamped himself in 'The Sopranos' so much, people have overlooked his many diversified roles he's performed," King said. "He was a very diverse character actor, who became a star."

IReporter Shana O'Neil worked in an office, where Gandolfini was shooting in 1994. She remembers him as "Jersey through and through" with a great smile. "I just always think of him as that guy."

His Sopranos fame, she said, changed nothing about the way she remembers him.

Gandolfini's acting credits included roles in "The Last Castle" with Robert Redford, "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, and "Surviving Christmas" with Ben Affleck.

In recent years, he had starred in several movies, including the Oscar-nominated "Zero Dark Thirty," "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" and "Killing Them Softly."

Gandolfini was also known to children, voicing Carol, a wild thing, in the 2009 movie adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic "Where the Wild Things Are."

He took to the stage to do a reading of Sendak's "In The Night Kitchen" to mark the author's 80th birthday.

News of the actor's death spread quickly, drawing shock and sadness from those who had worked with him.

"James Gandolfini was a kind, funny, wonderful guy. I'm so lucky to have worked with him. Sending love to his family. Such a sad, sad day," Olivia Wilde, who starred with the actor in "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," said in a post on Twitter.

Actor Steve Carell of "Office" fame, who also appeared in "Wonderstone", simply said on Twitter: "James Gandolfini. What a great loss."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie described himself as a "huge fan" of Gandolfini.

"It's an awful shock. James Gandolfini was a fine actor, a Rutgers alum and a true Jersey guy," he said.

If his managers are right, and he died of a heart attack, it struck much too early, said CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

"(The) average age of someone having a first heart attack -- if this is in fact what we're talking about -- is usually in the mid-60s," he said.

Risk factors such as smoking, lack of exercise, obesity and high cholesterol can lower the age range significantly, according to Gupta.

Gandolfini is survived by his wife, Deborah, and their 9-month-old daughter, Liliana. He is also survived by a son, Michael, from another marriage.

CNN's KJ Matthews, Douglas Hyde, Elise Miller and Henry Hanks contributed to this report.

Robert Downey Jr released a statement that he will appear in the next two Avengers movies(if they both get made) but that he won't be doing any future Iron Man movies. Of course that doesn't mean that we won't be seeing any future Iron Movies. There is sure to be at least one more based on the amount of money the last one did. It just won't have RDJ in it...At least not unless the studio drive a gigantic dump truck full of cash at RDJ's door and then he feels that one more movie is the right thing to do. Long live the Brown Coats.

You must be from Hollywood. You have their way of thinking down pat. No, no, nooooooooo, I can't, don't force me, I won't be forced, how much did you say I'd be making, plus percentage of the gross, plus DVD sales, cable rights, plus executive producer credit for me (or my girlfriend/wife/partner).

The studio's bet might not be wrong. I think they're learning from video games. The biggest video game fans are disappointed if a major release does NOT come out with a special version for $99 or more with a bunch of collectibles. San Diego is a natural place for a screening of this sort since the San Diego Comics Con is one of the biggest events of the year in SD - it sells out faster & faster every year even though the price keeps going up and it's getting further and further from its origins as a comics convention and now more about the major studios showing off their block-busters that have any kind of fantasy, horror or sci-fi elements.

It will be interesting to see how successful these World War Z screenings are.

Kick-Ass 2 is coming August 16.

The first one was good, with Nicolas Cage and Chloë Grace Moretz as his daughter, Hit Girl.
Unfortunately, Nicolas Cage dies in the movie, but Chloe Grace Moretz carries on the good fight against crime.

Now, Kick-Ass 2 is coming, with Chloe Grace Moretz back as Hit Girl, Aaron Taylor-Johnson back as Kick Ass, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the villain "The Mother Fucker", and Jim Carrey lending his support to Kick Ass and Hit Girl.

I don't especially care for Jim Carrey, but I am looking forward to this movie, think it could be good.
Different from the super-hero blockbusters.

I think that they only way he will do it is if the amount is at least a guaranteed 100 million in his pocket. Jack Nicholson made 75 million for his role as the Joker but his was from box office profits. The studio would never sign a similar deal for RDJ because the amount could get much higher than 100 million. Long live the Brown Coats.

Liam Neeson Enters Exclusive $20 Million Club With 'Taken 3'
By Bryan Enk | Movie Talk – 5 hours ago

Liam Neeson is being paid handsomely for his particular set of skills.

First of all, yes, there is going to be a third installment in the "Taken" franchise — which was most definitely inevitable, even though Neeson himself laughed off the possibility a few months ago with "That's just bad parenting" (which is true, but it also makes for good movie-making). Second of all — and this is definitely something of a surprise — Neeson himself will be joining the $20 million club for reprising his role as former CIA operative and dad, Bryan Mills.

The veteran actor (and former boxer) has opted for high octane action roles over the past several years, which has coined the playful term of "Neesploitation" — and made him one of the most bankable stars in the business. Oscar-nominated for his dramatic role in Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List," Neeson went on to score a handful of sword-wielding (or lightsaber-wielding) swashbuckling roles in "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" (1999), "Batman Begins" (2005) and "Kingdom of Heaven" (2005) before embracing more B-movie material like "Taken" (2009), "The A-Team" (2010), and "Unknown" (2011). Even director Joe Carnahan's moody, Malick-esque survival tale "The Grey" (2012) was marketed as a movie in which Liam Neeson took on a bunch of vicious wolves in bad weather.

Now, with "Taken 3," Neeson is apparently a full-blown A-list movie star — and he's got the zeroes on his paycheck to prove it. The $20 Million Club in Hollywood has had a few distinguished members over the years, though it's certainly a club from which it's pretty easy to lose one's membership, depending on how long audiences actually, you know, go to see your movies. Members of the club have included Neeson's ex-lover Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, and Mel Gibson. Stars like Kristen Stewart, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr., and Johnny Depp can currently demand even more than that.

However, the $20 million club isn't what it used to be. Several stars have taken considerable pay cuts in order for certain films to actually get made. Profitable films with no-name casts like "Paranormal Activity" have also given studios more leverage in negotiating lower paychecks — after all, if they can make money with a movie starring a bunch of unknowns, what do they need movie stars for?

Fans should be pleased with Liam Neeson receiving a $20 million paycheck under any circumstances. Ever since the untimely 2009 death of his wife Natasha Richardson, Neeson has been a bit of a workaholic — and the more physical the roles, the better. He has a charm and humbleness that makes him one of Hollywood's most likable stars, and there's something truly cathartic about watching him punch out every single person in France as he frantically searches for his daughter — Neeson provides "audience participation" cinema like no one else as you can't help but root for him as he goes about his seemingly insurmountable tasks and comes out the other side with only a few cuts and bruises.

"Taken" has become a sure-thing action franchise. The original 2009 film, which cost only $5 million more than what Neeson is getting paid for the third film, grossed $376 million worldwide. Last year's "Taken 2" cost $45 million and scored $226 million.

"Taken 3" will commence production in March 2014 from a script by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. No director or supporting cast has been announced, though Deadline speculates that "Taken 2" director Olivier Megaton will be back for more, as will Neeson's co-stars Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen.

If Will Smith won't be in the Independence Day sequels, who's going to bother going to see those movies in a theater?
Director Roland Emmerich has made a big mistake, thinking that Will Smith, at $50 million per movie, is too expensive.
Will Smith is a proven box-office Megastar. And he's worth every penny of $50 million.

Just ask Will Smith himself. He will tell you, he's absolutely worth every penny of whatever money these fools pay him.

Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr, these guys are my heroes. Making $50 million or more to appear in a movie. Pretty soon, everyone will be making that kind of money. Even the people working at McDonald's or Burger King. This is trickle down economics at work.

In the previous article I copied, it said Liam Neeson has entered the exclusive $20 million club, because he will be paid that for making Taken 3. Shame on him. Working for $20 million, when super Megastars are making $50 million or more? Neeson is dragging down the rest of us.

Who’s Gonna Punch That Alien? Director Says Will Smith ‘Too Expensive’ for ‘Independence Day’ Sequels

By Mark Deming | Movie Talk – Mon, Jun 24, 2013 3:49 PM EDT

Will SmithWill Smith, too pricey for 'Independence Day' sequels

It looks like Will Smith has priced himself out of the role that first made him a box office champ.

Director Roland Emmerich is working on not one but two sequels to his 1996 sci-fi thriller "Independence Day," which was Smith's first true blockbuster hit, grossing over $300 million in the United States alone (it debuted the same year "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" went off the air). But the filmmaker has announced the franchise is moving on without Smith.

"Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name," Emmerich told reporters on Monday.

Emmerich first floated the idea for a pair of "ID4" follow-ups in 2011, but the project stalled, because Smith reportedly wanted $50 million to appear in the movies. Smith hasn't gotten much more affordable in the past two years, and besides, in the wake of "After Earth," there's reason to question Smith's continued ability to open a movie on a grand scale.

As it happens, Emmerich hopes to add some fresh faces for the "Independence Day" sequels and give the project an ensemble feel.

"We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film [in the sequels], and the other half people who are new," Emmerich said.

The People's Champ has made a habit of coming in late to an already established franchise, and then helping that film make gobs of money. Because of that skill, we thought of some other films that ... more

While Emmerich insists he has two "Independence Day" sequels in the works, tentatively titled "ID Forever Part One" and "ID Forever Part Two," so far 20th Century Fox has only given the first picture the green light, apparently waiting to see how it fares before committing to the second. "ID Forever" is currently slated to open in theaters on July 3, 2015.

If Will Smith wants to remind himself of his past hits, he has plenty of chances for that soon; he's attached to sequels to "Hancock" and "I, Robot," and is rumored to be teaming up with Martin Lawrence for a third "Bad Boys" flick. And before Emmerich starts work on the "ID4" sequels, he'll be busy doing publicity for "White House Down," his four-barreled action vehicle starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx that opens in theaters June 28.

Note to Roland Emmerich: If Will Smith is too expensive, have you considered hiring Jaden or Willow for the picture? They work a lot cheaper than their dad, and Will clearly likes to see his kids earning their allowance. Add Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to that recipe and Emmerich would easily have the start to another big blockbuster.

A real jolt! Thanks for passing on the news, lk2.
Any idea how this will effect the show, should plans be in the works to resume the Sopranos series on HBO?

I doubt that the Sopranos will be resumed.
James Gandolfini played the lead character.
Without him, the show, even though full of other interesting characters, would be very different.
I doubt the creator of the show was thinking of resuming the show before Gandolfini's death.
And now that Gandolfini is dead, it would be a real stretch if they tried to make new episodes.

I don't think he's wrong with this one. I like Will Smith as an actor but other than the MIB movies and the I Robot" movie. There isn't much else that I've enjoyed from him. He also no longer has the box office clout that he once had and this is especially true after the catastrophic After Earth. The movie cost 130 millions but there must be almost another 100 millions tied in to promotion and what not and the movie only made 57 millions at the domestic box office. It did manage to make 171 when you add Foreign box office but that means that the studio probably lost over 100 million.

I'd also like to add that Smith wasn't exactly the star of the last movie. He was only an Air Force pilot with dreams of becoming an astronaut who flew the ship that destroyed the aliens. Jeff Goldblum was probably the bigger star in the last one Long live the Brown Coats.

I was trying to be ironic, or facetious, when I wrote that Will Smith is worth every penny of $50 million.

You spend that kind of money on a single actor, and it's a real gamble that the movie will make money.

I don't have anything against Will Smith, he's just like a lot of other Hollywood superstars who are making many millions of dollars per picture, and they want as much as they can get, which is part of human nature. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are billionaires, but they are still interested in making even more money.

I liked Will Smith in Ali (the Muhammad Ali movie). But he doesn't do a lot of serious characters.

At one time Jeff Goldblum was hot: The Big Chill, Silverado, The Fly, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Jurassic Park 2.

But his popularity or stardom seems to have vanished. I don't know why, it is something that just happens with actors.

I just saw The Hunger Games.
I thought it would be like the Twilight moives, with sparkly vampires and shirtless werewolves.

But I was wrong.

This is a much more entertaining film.

There are also some fine actors in the film: Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland.

Jennifer Lawrence gives an outstanding performance.

Highly recommend this movie, it's not just for teenage girls.

I am now watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Now I will never be able to trust the US government ever again.

They have lied to us, again and again.

They keep secrets from us, while spying on friends, allies, US citizens, and everyone else they can spy on.

The US was not the first to land on the moon. There were aliens before us. And the US government found proof, and keep it hidden.

Never believe what the government tells. They are professional liars.

My thanks to Michael Bay for exposing this evil truth.

Of course, the reality that gives life to the conspiracy theorists is that the government DOES in fact lie to us all the time. I'm reading Jeremy Scahill's brilliant well-documented book, "Dirty Wars" - the US government uses the Special Forces as a particularly blood-thirsty, fairly in-discriminant version of Murder Inc around the world. For every Osama bin Laden they kill, they kill tens of thousands of men, women and children - and have quotes from the people leading and unleashing all that carnage that the people they're killing were no threats to the US whatsoever, which doesn't even slow them down.

Then people wonder "why do they hate us?"

‘Lone Ranger’ may cost Disney $100 mln write-down

By Maria LaMagna, MarketWatch

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — After a disappointing opening weekend, Walt Disney Co.’s “The Lone Ranger” has evolved from an action-packed story of a masked hero to a cautionary tale about films with big budgets and undefined target audiences.

“The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who previously teamed up for a run of “Pirates of the Caribbean” success, brought in just $48.9 million in its first five days in theaters.

Analysts called that a bleak number, given the film’s production costs, which are estimated to have been between $215 million and $250 million.

Wunderlich Securities had predicted the film would bring in $60 million in its first five days.

Now Disney DIS +0.36% is expected to take a write-down of $100 million or more on the movie in the fourth fiscal quarter, according to analysts.

The company is slated to report its third-quarter results on Aug. 6.

Investors have shrugged off the disappointing opening weekend of “The Lone Ranger.” Disney’s shares, in fact, have gained more than 1% this week to trade above $64. They are up 30% in 2013.

Disney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Some have blamed the weekend letdown on timing. Although the July 4 weekend is typically lucrative, “The Lone Ranger” debuted along with the Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig–voiced hit “Despicable Me 2,” which brought in a record $142.1 million in domestic gross proceeds during the five-day weekend period.

Universal’s “Despicable Me 2” did so well that it seemed to tap into all demographics, according to Paul Dergarabedian, the president of the box-office division at Hollywood.com, and surely overlapped with “The Lone Ranger” audience despite their genre differences. “Everybody loves the minions, not just little kids,” he said. “They’re intriguing characters.”

Those who saw “The Lone Ranger” were decidedly older: 68% were over 25, while 24% were over 50 and only 16% of the audience was younger than 18.

This more mature audience, perhaps familiar with the classic “Lone Ranger” character from the 1930s radio show or the 1950s television show, had to adjust to Bruckheimer’s style, Dergarabedian said, and it just didn’t seem to work.

“It’s one thing to have fun with big action movies, but, when you have something like a western, it’s tough to tinker with the formula,” Dergarabedian said. It appears, in light of “The Lone Ranger,” that “the diehard fans don’t like that, and the younger audience isn’t that into westerns anyway,” he said.

Bruckheimer has produced several recent films for Disney that performed poorly, including “G-Force,” “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”

But fingers of blame were also directed at Depp.

Outside of hits such as the “Pirates” franchise and “Alice in Wonderland,” Depp has starred in a number of box-office disappointments, including “The Rum Diary” and “Dark Shadows.”

“The Lone Ranger” got an average 4.7/10 rating on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a B-plus CinemaScore. Critics said it was too long (at 2 hours and 29 minutes) and the script was bland.

The criticism is reminiscent of another recent Disney flop, “John Carter,” which resulted in a $200 million loss for the company. Yet even after “John Carter,” shortly after which then–Walt Disney Studios Chairman Rich Ross resigned, Disney’s stock barely moved. The movie’s write-down was 6 cents a share, and Disney shares traded at around $41 at the time.

Analysts have predicted a similar result from “The Lone Ranger.”

David Miller, an analyst at B. Riley who covers Disney, said in a note that he thinks post–“Lone Ranger,” Disney will see a write-down of 4 or 5 cents. Firm numbers will not be known for 10 to 14 days, he said, because Disney does not reveal negative costs on its films.

Miller cautioned it could be premature to predict any write-down at all; Disney may wait to see how the film does overseas first.

Lazard Capital Markets said Disney could face a $190 million writeoff, while Wunderlich Securities estimated $150 million.

Disney will weather the hit, Dergarabedian said. For every “John Carter” or “Lone Ranger,” there’s a “Monsters University” or “The Avengers.”

“This isn’t going to break Disney,” he said. “They’re a large enough company, and the film division is just a part. I’m not worried about Disney long term.”

Still, “The Lone Ranger” looks set to leave Disney with a lot of ground to make up. “Every studio is going to have its hits and flops, but when you have budgets over $200 million, you have to take a very careful look,” Dergarabedian said.

^I don't know if you remember but The Lone Ranger almost didn't get made because the studio found that the original budget of 250 millions was too high. The producer said it cut it down to 215 millions but it still somehow magically wound up back to it's original cost of 250 millions. When you add marketing budget and what not then we are probably looking at a final cost of 350 millions dollars. If the studio thinks that they will only have to do a 100 millions write-down then they've probably being using too much of Tinkerbell's magic powder.

The movie has only made 79 millions as of yesterday and a 1/4 of that amount is from Foreign box office takes so actual profit is much lower on Foreign than Domestic. The movie will probably not be in theaters 2 weeks from now so when can they expect to even make half of their money back?

This financial fiasco may be the catalyst that puts a stop to any future Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I know that's unlikely but one never knows. Maybe people are fed up of seeing Depp play a stoned/drunk/weird character as the protagonist. Long live the Brown Coats.

Pat, you can stop holding your breath.
It was announced back in January of this year that Johnny Depp had signed for the new Pirates of the Caribbean 5, to be released in 2015.
Supposedly, Depp will be paid $116 million for the role.
That should keep him from having to eat at McDonald's for the next 2 years, unless they name a Johnnny Depp burger in his honor.

^I knew it was in the works but I was hoping that they had an out clause in the contract for such an event. I didn't see the last one so I can't really comment but number 2 was bad and number 3 was so awful that I've seen it once on dvd and I have no desire to ever see it again. That's telling when you consider that I own the movie.

I don't know if the next installment of POTC is going to make money but I hope it bombs. If only so that we can see Depp play something other than Jack Sparrow. He has now played the same character 5 times in movies, 4 in the POTC franchise and Tonto is pretty the same character in The Lone Ranger. Long live the Brown Coats.

Just came back from seeing Pacific Rim and this is by far my favorite movie this year. I can't say the story is all that original because I've seen similar Japanese movies in my youth but Del Toro still managed to do some nice things with the premise. The effects are amazing, the lighting is very good and the pacing is excellent. I didn't look at my watch once and that's rather telling when you consider the movie is two and a half hours long.

Many of the scenes happen at night or in low light and that didn't prevent me from seeing all of the action. That's impressive when you consider that I saw the movie in 3D.

Well worth seeing in a theater. Long live the Brown Coats.

I realize this is just a comic, or maybe a fantasy, but if Batman fights Superman, how can anyone expect Batman to win?

Batman certainly expects to win the fight, but I suspect that Batman is more than a little crazy. Or maybe he's just pumped full of the bullshit that professional wrestlers are when they proclaim they are the greatest, and will defeat any opponents.

Batman, a mortal human, against Superman, an alien creature with superpowers. Unless Batman is loaded with Kryptonite weapons, then how does Batman stand a chance of winning?

Maybe if Superman ties both hands behind his back, and promises to only use 1 finger in the fight, and not to use his super-strength or any of his other superpowers, then Batman might stand a chance.

Batman Set to Join Superman for ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel in 2015
By Matt McDaniel | Movie Talk – 5 hours ago

Henry Cavill's Superman will team up with Batman in 2015.

Superman took flight again this summer in "Man of Steel," which has so far taken in over $280 million in the US and over $620 million worldwide, making it the #2 movie at the box office for 2013 ("Iron Man 3" sits securely at the top spot). Naturally, Henry Cavill is set to step into the character's red boots again, but at the Comic-Con today, there was surprising news that he'll be joined by another caped superhero.

Batman will team up with Superman in the next movie, The Hollywood Reporter and the Los Angeles Times confirmed Saturday morning. "Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David Goyer (who also worked on "The Dark Knight" series) will return for the film expected to be released in 2015. Christian Bale, however, is not expected to return as the Caped Crusader.

There was speculation that Warner Bros. would follow "Man of Steel" with a "Justice League" movie that would bring together all of the major heroes from the DC Comics world, including Wonder Woman, but that has been pushed back. Instead, they will follow the Superman/Batman team up with a movie for the super-speedy hero The Flash in 2016, and follow with "Justice League" in 2017.

SUPERMAN'S SUITOne has red shorts. The other does not. Because, apparently, in 2013, we just can't take the red shorts seriously any more … at least according to Zack Snyder.

This will be the first time the two biggest names in DC Comics will share the big screen, but it almost happened once before over a decade ago. After the embarrassing "Batman & Robin" in 1997, several reboots of the Caped Crusader were proposed, including "Batman vs. Superman." Director Wolfgang Petersen ("Air Force One") was attached to a script by "Seven" screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker that would have pitted the two against each other, but that project was eventually scrapped for Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins."

Batman and Superman, who partnered up in the comics under the title "World's Finest," will have another superhero team to watch out for when they hit the screen. Marvel's "The Avengers 2" has already been announced to open that same year on May 1, 2015.

UPDATE: Director Zack Snyder officially announced that Batman will indeed appear in his follow-up to "Man of Steel." He revealed a logo for the movie that combines Superman's "S" shield (yes, we know it's not an "S") with the Bat-symbol, which notably looked different than the one in Christopher Nolan's trilogy. They also used a quote from Frank Miller's groundbreaking graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns" where Batman and Superman engage in a fight to the finish. Batman says, "I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you." So we can assume that the two icons won't be getting along in the new movie. Henry Cavill is definitely returning, as are Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane, but Batman has yet to be cast.

I read that today and the first thing that came to mind was that it's a really dumb idea. You have one franchise that just ended and one that had a hard time getting off the ground and you want to mix both of them. How about making a sequel to Superman that isn't so dark and moody? I don't know if they realise this but Superman is suppose to be an upbeat superhero. I know they wanted to avoid that when they made Man of Steel but the box office profits should have been a gigantic warning sign that a sequel better no go down the same route or they will suffer a worse faith.

These kind of stories tell me that Hollywood no longer knows how to make good movies. Long live the Brown Coats.

I've decided to become a Loki-ite. My hero, after being vanquished by the Avengers in Part 1, is now coming back in all his glory in Thor: The Dark World.

You can't keep a villain down. Not in comic book history, anyway.

"Silence, you mewling quims." What a great line. What a great character.

What is a quim, anyway?

Comic-Con: Marvel Announces ‘Avengers 2′ Villain & Title: ‘Age Of Ultron’
By MIKE FLEMING JR | Saturday July 20, 2013 @ 7:13pm PDTTags: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Joss Whedon, Marvel Studios, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World
Mike Fleming

In the final moments of Marvel’s rousing panel at Hall H, Marvel chief Kevin Feige brought out Joss Whedon, who showed a very early teaser of the sequel The Avengers and revealed that the film will be called Age Of Ultron with a May 1, 2015 release date. Marvel Comics aficionados might know that the title and the baddie Ultron are the subject of 10-issue limited series comic book crossover storyline published by Marvel Comics that involves the return of Ultron and his conquest of the earth. Ultron and his Sentinels should prove a worthy antagonist for the Avengers and it looked like all will be back though there was no mention of Vin Diesel, who is rumored to be in line to play The Vision. The comic series was published between March and June 2013 and features a storyline by Brian Michael Bendis. Artist Bryan Hitch provided the art for issues one through five, and Brandon Peterson for issues six through eight. Other artists who contributed to the series include Carlos Pacheco and Joe Quesada, the latter of whom drew part of the final issue.

After DC’s announcement earlier today that the sequel to Man of Steel would be a Superman/Batman team up, the pressure was on for Marvel to top that bombshell during their own Hall H Comic Con panel. Marvel delivered with the announcement of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it wasn’t just Avengers news that electrified the assembled throngs of fanboys and fangirls. Marvel put on a highly theatrical presentation that featured never before seen footage of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as some of the most elaborate fan service seen at this year’s Comic Con courtesy of Loki actor Tom Hiddleston.

After a brief introduction from panel moderator Chris Hardwick and Feige, Hiddleston came onstage dressed in character as Loki to present new footage from Thor: The Dark World. “Silence, you mewling quims,” a scenery chewing Hiddleston said, referencing The Avengers‘ most notorious line of dialogue. Delivering a speech based heavily on his lines from the blockbuster, Hiddleston exhorted the crowd to shout his name. The Thor footage included scenes previously seen in the recent teaser, but mainly offered a much expanded look at the film’s larger scope. It was small on actual plot details but demonstrated that Marvel intends to keep doing what has worked for them for the last 5 years.

Oops. I just read that "quim" is an old English word for "cunt". And that Loki was using to to refer to Naatasha, the Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson.

Supposedly, the word was allowed in a PG 13 movie because the term is archaic, and obviously an American audience wouldn't know what it means.

But it seems the people at Mervel are pretty proud of their inside joke, because Loki (actor Tom Hiddleston) used the expression, "Silence, you mewling quims", to greet the audience at the San Diego Comic Con.

But if asked to explain what a quim is, the people at Marvel might say it's just an odd term of disrepect, or even deny that it has any sexual meaning at all.

Dennis Farina dead at 69

1:44 p.m. CDT, July 22, 2013

Dennis Farina, a Chicago native and police officer who turned to acting, has died at 69 in Arizona, his publicist said today.

Farina, best known as detective Joe Fontana on the long-running TV series "Law & Order," suffered a blood clot in his lung, publicist Lori De Waal said.

Farina was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, a detective who moonlighted on Chicago theater stages and in small movie roles. In the 1980s he was on the NBC television series "Crime Story."

He became a full-time actor much in demand for feature films ("Midnight Run," "Saving Private Ryan," "Get Shorty," "Snatch"), TV movies ("The Case of the Hillside Strangler," "Empire Falls") and TV series ("The In-Laws," "Buddy Faro").

He then became one of the stars of "Law & Order," playing tough, nattily dressed Detective Joe Fontana.

Farina was born on Feb. 29, 1944, the fourth son and youngest of the seven children of Joseph and Yolanda Farina. The father was a doctor, the mother a homemaker, and they raised their kids in a home at 549 W. North Ave. in an area that was then a working-class neighborhood with a broad ethnic mix predominated by Italians and Germans.

He went to school right around the corner from his home, at St. Michael's Elementary and St. Michael's Central High School.

After graduating from high school, Farina decided to "get the Army out of the way" and served three years before returning to Chicago. He worked for a while at the South Water produce market until, on the advice of his older brother, a lawyer, he joined the police force and studied criminal justice at Truman Junior College.

The actor is survived by his three sons, six grandchildren and the love of his life of 35 years, Marianne Cahill.

Funeral services are pending.

I was curious to know how bad The Lone Ranger's box office profits were going to be and as of yesterday they are 164 millions. Normally that wouldn't necessarily be such a bad number but only 85 millions is from North America and the percentage is better when it's from domestic box office. Of course since the budget of the LR was 215 millions. To that we add a reasonable 85 millions in marketing so Disney spent about 300 millions to make and market the movie so they easily lost 130 millions. Long live the Brown Coats.

Even if Disney lost $135 million on the Lone Ranger, you wouldn't know it from the stock price.
There are more Pirates movies coming, plus Star Wars, plus whatever.

All true but even a powerhouse like Disney must still feel the loss of 135 millions. I'd also like to add that the Star Wars project has not even begun and there are already grumblings. Key one being the supposed director. I'm sure that JJ Abrams looked like an amazing idea when they were considering which director should get the job but I keep hearing rumors that Disney isn't too happy with the direction he wants to take the franchise and after the amount they paid for the franchise then the last thing they want is another clusterf..k like the prequels. They made money and that's all good but I don't think too many people are happy with finish product. There's the fact that the last Star Trek movie was not the hit that Paramount was hoping for and they want another one by 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

I like the stuff JJ Abrams does but I can't say that his 2 Star Trek movies were all that great. The first one was pretty good but the story was awful. The second one is even worse. Long live the Brown Coats.

Personally, I've enjoyed Joss Whedon films more than JJ Abrams. I guess I mean Serenity and The Avengers. I liked them better than the JJ Abrams films I saw: Star Trek, Super 8, Mission Impossible 3.

^I think it's fair to say that I have loved everything that Joss has done over the years. My only issue with him is his need of killing main characters. That tends to piss me off but what can you do. He is also a genius at coming up with original stuff while JJ tends to copy other peoples stuff. That's not to say that he doesn't add his own style and flavor to the work but he's less of a creator and more of a modifier. That said. I think he is the only director who's been able to make a Spielberg like movie with the amazing "Super 8". I can't tell you just how much I love that movie on so many levels. Long live the Brown Coats.

Steve Spielberg is a franchise.
I mean his production company is everywhere.
He is far more than just one of the most famous directors alive.
He is a major force in TV, producing many of the most famous series being made.
He is also, or his production company is, behind a lot of the movies being made.

He was a producer, and his production company was involved, in making Super 8.

He's also executive producer of the Transformer movies, with your and my favorite Michael Bay. (By favorite, I mean Michael Bay has an eye for pretty ladies. .)

Bruce Willis shows his softer side in A Good Day To Die Hard.
He bonds with his son. I never knew he had a son until this movie came along. Willis and his son, a chip off the old block who is a CIA agent.

I liked the first few Die Hard movies. But this one seems to have lost the freshness. Kind of boring, in spite of the many explosions and bad guys getting killed. No real bad guys stand out, just cardboard characters whose sole purpose seems to be to get wiped out by the heroes.
