Thanks for the comments and advice. i probably won't be taking the plunge in the next 12 months but I am confident that VR will have eventually be mainstream in porn and because of that I'll take the plunge sometime.
I hear you on the issue of porn driving so much technology. Hmmm... what on earth could the 4-head VCR be good for...?

In terms of hardware, what else is needed besides the player? Is the 'player' just software? Is the headset thing USB or HDMI or something else?

Thanks for posting this review. For a long time I always tried to be on the cutting edge of technology and a lot of that was driven by porn. I had the first VCR of all of my friends (back when they were top-loading and weighed 50 lbs.), I was a early adopter into DVDs. I skipped Blueray simply because online porn and external storage was becoming better and cheaper. But... I can't bring myself to take the plunge on VR yet and it isn't that I don't think it would be any good, but my worry is that it isn't plug-and-play and I'd never be able to figure out how to use it.
Someday though...

I'm not sure if this will work, but if you've visited the site before at any time you'd likely still have that cookie in your computer which may prevent getting the better offer. It's worth clearing your cookies and giving that a try. I hope that works for you.

I agree 100%. The site should be tagged as lesbian because that's a strong part of it and they do it really well. It reminds me of when I was pleasantly surprised to find so much public flashing and exhibitionism on FTV Girls.
So let it be known through these comments: if you like lesbain material, you need to seriously consider a membership to Viv Thomas.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I really enjoyed your site and I hope I made it clear in my review that of the few things I didn't like all but one was purely subjective. Even my issue with navigation probably isn't an issue for members who know the models. The fact is that I probably wouldn't have seen it as much of a concern if I knew the models. I hope that's clear to prospective members.
I must be confused about the Desire Moore thing... Middle-age is creeping in. That's my excuse and I apologize for the error.
As I said in my review though, one thing that I found amazing on your site were the 'banned' videos. Thanks for posting those. I like your site and would definitely recommend it (actually, I already did to a porn buddy who would really love your site) and for me those fisting videos alone were worth the membership fee!

Yes. It was pretty rare to see an HD scene in wmv format. I didn't download a lot from this site, but I only managed to get one HD scene in wmv. Most of them are mp4 and it looks like all new HD material is mp4 only.
Maybe tangub can add to this as he's got a membership here too.

Thanks for the comment, cybertoad. I really think this is the weakest review I've done in a long time. I just didn't have any 'connection' with this site. You might have had the same thing where you take a membership without really knowing what you're getting. This is an great site (not excellent) but just not for me.

Usually when I join a site it’s because it’s a site I’ve looked at and thought that it has material that I’d like to download and view. If the site does the technical stuff well and they deliver what they promised then I’ll probably recommend the site.
Things are different for Viv Thomas though. This wasn’t a site on my radar until tangub noted that they were offering an additional discount beyond the normal TBP/PU discount. Based on the reviews here and on TBP, and a quick scan of the site I signed up. I don’t regret taking a membership, but I’m fining this review difficult to write just because I’m so ambivalent in my reaction to the site. I should point out that my review follows on the heels of tangub’s excellent review and you need to read that because he has a lot of important information in there.
I have no idea how many picture sets and videos there are on this site, but it is quite large. Tangub has some figures in his review that seem accurate.
The site doesn’t appear to favour video over photos or vice versa: both seem well represented.
Videos are usually offered in both WMV (Codec 9) and mp4. When HD is available it is usually offered only in mp4 though I did see and download some in WMV. I never saw a scene where HD was offered in both formats. HD isn’t available with every scene, and oddly it doesn’t even seem to be offered with each new upload. I prefer WMV format, so I can’t comment on the quality of the mp4 files. The highest resolution available for WMV videos is 1280x720 at 4000kb/s, which is HD, but remember that WMV HD is rare here. More common are 720x526 at 2200, 640x360 at 2200 and 512x384 at 1550 with the latter resolution appearing to be the most common. These are lower resolutions than I’ve seen at comparable sites.
Photos are available in multiple resolutions with the highest being 2400x1600. Photo sets are available as a zip and the sets can have as few as 30 or over a hundred photos in them.
Subjectively, this is a pretty good site, and it is one of the better studio sites that I’ve seen. It seems that many studios treat the internet as an afterthought, but Viv Thomas does seem to understand the importance of the internet.
My biggest complaint about the site is the navigation. This might be different if you’re a fan of Euro porn and know the models, but for someone who is relatively new to Euro porn the site can be difficult to use. Using the navigation tools to go to boy-girl videos, for example, you’re offered several pages of thumbnails, which will lead you to a particular scene. My beef is that there is little information given apart from the title of the DVD that the scene is from. You actually have to open the link to find out who’s in the scene. You can search by model too, but I didn’t find that to be of much help either since all you have is a small thumbnail to go by. You might open the link only to discover that the model is nothing like what you expected from the small thumbnail. I may be nit-picking here, but I prefer as much information as possible before I have to click on another link. At a bare minimum I like to see DVD name and star. A bonus would be a few tags.
It appears that as much as, and maybe more than, half the site is girl-girl material. That’s great if you’re looking for girl-girl, but it limits the site’s appeal to others. The odd thing is that there are models who do boy-girl elsewhere who only have girl-girl on this site.
There are also a lot of BTS scenes available, which can be good or bad depending on your interest in those.
I have no idea how often the site might get cleaned up, but when I joined I noted that they listed both Ariana Jollie and Desire Moore as models on the site. By the time I went back to download some of their material neither were to be found on the site. I don’t know if this happens to other models because I don’t know Euro models that well. Just be mindful – if you see a model you like, get her material right away. Just in case.
Even though I’m somewhat indifferent to this site I do recognize that it is still a good site. It just isn’t what I’m into. It is more ‘soft’ than I usually buy. I should add, though, that in a link for ‘banned’ video they have some scenes from “Dirty Dog 4” which has some girl/girl anal fisting with some A-list girls (Angel Long and Ariana Jollie among them, but uncredited in the description.)
So would I recommend this site? Absolutely – as long as you like what they have to offer. For someone like me who thinks Kink.com is the best studio on the planet, and regularly signs up at Evil Angel, Viv Thomas is a bit soft for my tastes. Viv Thomas has lots to offer in pics and video, in resolutions that are average. There are some hot European models here with an emphasis on girl-girl. If this is what you like, you’ll probably like Viv Thomas. |

It’s funny how much alike our reactions to this site are and that the reasons for those reactions are almost identical. Like you, I’m coming off of a Young Legal Porn membership and that membership really changed porn for me. I don’t mean to sound like I’m exaggerating because I’m not. I’ve been buying online porn for a long time and YLP was like a breath of fresh air. (A minor difference for me is that my favourite models are Gloria and Ivana.) I was thinking of joining Videobox again but I just don’t have the desire to join another site with generic porn. Viv Thomas isn’t necessarily generic porn – it’s actually great porn – but it does follow the model of most other mainstream porn. When I write a review I’m going to try to be objective and not subjective. Had I joined Viv Thomas before YLP I’m sure I’d have liked it a lot more. That’s no criticism of Viv Thomas since I suspect that would have happened to any site that followed YLP.

Great review! I joined using the Halloween special they had and I'm impressed too. I'd never heard of Viv Thomas, probably because I don't collect a lot of European porn, but this is a seriously good site. I agree that the site is big enough that it needs better navigation.

I ended up paying about $14CDN which still isn't bad. Maybe the site owners figure that since they give a TBP discount already that there is no need to offer a further discount. But it could just be a technical glitch too.
Oops... I should have read the whole thread of comments since the webmaster replied...
I'm looking forward to spending some time at this site. It isn't my normal kind of site but neither was Young Legal Porn and the related sites and I found those to be among the best I've ever had a membership to.

Thanks for the update. Based on what you were seeing I logged on to the site directly using my iPad and I was given the discount offer. The offer isn't exactly a 50% discount because it is only offered in Euros so it doesn't convert to half. But a discount is a discount and I appreciate it. I cleared my history on my PC and entered the site directly and there was the offer. So I signed up. These types of sites are not normally what I'm interested in, but most people seem to like it so I'll try it at the discounted price.
All that to say that DO NOT ENTER VIV THOMAS THROUGH TBP/PU or you won't see the discount offer. If you have, clear your history and you should be okay.
I'm not tech-savvy enough to explain what you're experiencing, tangub, but is it possible you haven't clicked off all the possible boxes for clearing your history and some category is remaining behind?

As with the World Cup discount, the link to take advantage of the discount well hidden. I'll keep looking, but for now this seems to be more trick than treat. There is a huge ad for the offer on the main page, but clicking any link to join takes you to the main page where you can join for the $19.95 TBP price or the "Special Visa Offer" of $24.95.
I've tried every obvious way to locate the discount, including the pull-down menus on the join page but I can't find it. And since by the time I get home from work the offer will be gone I can't take advantage of it.
Why make it so difficult??????

After I posted that the possibility crossed my mind that it could be for former members since you got an email telling you about it. I get emails from Kink.com with offers that specifically mention that the offer is for former members. Other sites do that too, so that's probably the most likely reason. I think it was Ed (a webmaster who posts here frequently) who wrote that his experience is that discounts don't work. They work on me though. A half price membership to try a site that I have some interest in would be an instant sign-up. I sent a question to their help desk... I wonder if they'll make the offer anyway... It doesn't hurt to try!

Is it possible that this is discount for Europeans only? I searched the site for 10 minutes, and followed your instructions too, and I don't see a discount. I've been thinking of taking a chance on this site since it really isn't what I look for but it looks good - and a 50% discount had me sitting here with my credit card realy to buy.

Interesting review.
Any porn fan of a certain age remembers Vivid. For a while they were probably the leading studio. I saw lots of their stuff. My memory is a bit hazy but I suspect that I lost interest in Vivid when the new-fangled gonzo porn came along. I was instantly hooked on stuff from John Stagliano, Joey Silvera and others who carved out the new niche. I'd even put early Max Hardcore in their. I lost interest in story-based porn after that. (I admit that Stagliano did some story-based stuff too but it was zany and fun to watch. Like Wild Goose Chase. I still have that.)

Great review.
I like studio sites, though they're often poorly done. Vivid was obviously a powerhouse in the porn business for years but until you posted the review I had pretty much forgotten about them. Thanks for bringing them back to life for me.
What will be a deal-breaker is the streaming only status of the site. While you found a work-around for downloads, the fact that the site doesn't support them means they won't get me as a member. It bugs me that in an attempt to curtail privacy some sites choose to penalize paying customers like us.

I've commented here before that it seems a lot of the big studio sites seem to be an after-thought. Yes, I know that they are in the business of producing movies and not necessarily distributing them, but it seems to me to be obvious that the internet is the most popular way to distribute porn, and certainly will continue to dominate porn distribution. Sites like Hustler and Diabolic just don't seem to take the internet seriously.
I've used Hot Movies and sites like that before, but they can get pretty expensive and most of them have some DRM attached.
