Interesting review, exotics. I liked how you differentiated between a score for previous members and one for first-timers. I've never had a membership to any of the ATK sites but they've always been on my list of possibles.
You may be able to answer a question though... The studio Kick Ass Pictures has a series of DVD releases that seem to be affilaited with ATK. The Kick Ass DVDs seem to feature a lot of mainstream U.S. pornstars where the sites seem to have models who are unknown to me. Do you see any evidence that any of the KAP scenes are on ATK sites? And are there mainstream porn models on the ATK sites? I guess that's actually two questions... I've looked through several of the ATK sites and I find the tour pages don't help with these questions. Any advice will be appreciated.

Great review! I was interested to read this as soon as I saw it posted because this is one of my favourite sites on the 'net.
I agree with most of what you say, but I strongly agree with your wish that Kink offered some kind of membership that allowed access to multiple sites. My suspicion is that they don't do this because the sites appear to be stand-alone and run by a different crew for each. That might make sharing membership fees a little more difficult, but certainly not impossible.
You probably know these things, but, just in case some other readers aren't aware:
1) when you're a Kink member at one site you get discounts to other Kink sites,
2) make sure to register your email with them. They sometimes offer great deals to email subscribers, and
3) Videobox has a Kink channel with a blend of a lot of stuff from most Kink sites. The bad news is that to even see what the channel has to offer you need to be a VB member. The good news is that the monthly fee for the Kink channel is pro-rated for the month of your VB membership. If you join the Kink channel in week three of the VB membership you'll only pay for the one week provided you cancel VB after the month.

I think there's a bit of a disconnect between what people say in public and what they do in private. I remmeber reading in one book describing porn that it is something that we "privately adore and publicly abhor." And I'd couple that with a less accurate quote after it was reported that the porn industry had sales of 4 billion dollars that year (I'm guessing at the number) where someone stated that the religious right will believe this to be four people spending a billion dollars each.
Our culture in North America is increasingly sexualized and as that happens the reaction on the right gets stronger. (And on an unrelated note I read that the lead singer of Megadeth has come out as a Rick Sontorum support because Rick supports free speech. This guy must know a different Rick Santorum. That, or it's more likely that like so many other people you perceive free speech to be speech that you like.

I differentiate 'tour pages' from sites that allow a full view. So with that, I don't trust tour pages at all. I really can't understand why a site would create just a couple of tour pages and expect me to buy a membership based on a few photos. I want to see what I'm buying and I want samples of all photo resolutions available and a video sample in all resolutions too. To do less would be like expecting me to buy a car after only having seen the brochure.

Thanks for the review. I'm always on the look out for sites like this and I've never heard of this one before. Now based on your review I can avoid this and continue looking elsewhere. (And for me, sound and video not being in sync is definitely a killer. That REALLY annoys me!)

I use Free Download Manager. I don't use it to rip sites though, I use it because if the site allows a long time before a link times out then I can queue up several scenes and go and do something else. This way I'm not constantly monitoring a download so I can start another one. Another advantage to FDM is that it allows for much faster downloads than just using a browser like Internet Explorer.

I've been a member of Fucking Machines a few times too and they have their high production values in place there too. I recall that the price may be a bit higher but I suspect that reflects the production costs with buying and building all the equipment. It isn't something that Home Depot stocks! I'd also recommend getting on their mailing list if you aren't already (presuming that you have a porn-friendly email address...) They'll email offers fairly regularly and some of those can be too good to refuse. Also, as you likely know too, when you're a member of one site you get discounts on others.

Thanks for this information. I checked out Wicked when they were listed in the "What's Hot" list at TBP because they're a studio I like. I was really disappointed to see how poor the preview is. While seeing a model list is important, for me a DVD studio that doesn't list what DVDs are available on their site is a deal breaker. The decision to have such limited information available is baffling for a studio that should realize the value in a good preview. Maybe this is another example of a traditional studio completely missing the importance of the internet market.

I opted for currency problems because I interpreted that as including issues with the billing service. If a site has flaws and I'm aware of those flaws I'll still join if I think it is a good value for me because I like that niche. But what kills it for me immediately is a billing service that gets negative reactions from the members here. I can weigh the other options if I really want to see the site, but I'm not give credit card information to a site I don't trust.
And if I was allowed two votes, I'd follow the trend and choose poor preview. It bugs me when a site gives me no clear indication of what's inside with a membership. I give full marks to sites like Videobox and Evil Angel that let you see everything they have to offer before you join. Of course, this can't apply to photo sites and I'm aware of that limitation.

I wish I could help you, but I can't. I don't remember what titles I downloaded from this site so I can't locate and check them. I checked the site too and I can't find any information on resolutions. I agree with you that this is a VERY expensive way to buy porn. I only use this as a last resort for titles that I really want to see. Even then I'll often just stream them due to the download cost.
With VOD sites though, the prices can vary widely. This site has a sister called Adult DVD Empire and often times the prices are different so you might save some money that way. One thing though, those two related sites are probably the best for quality.

I've not ever tried any of their live services though I have watched a few taped performances of the live stuff and I have to agree that it is great stuff. Maybe one of these days I'll give it a try. I agree that although it would be difficult it would be very cool to see live shoots of all their niches.
I'm not familiar with the Folsom Street Fair, but I assumed that since it was in SF and that Kink decided to shoot there that it had to be pretty tolerant and open. It would be fun to see sometime.

My guess is that the European public shoot are a lot harder to do so they're not posted as often. There was one posted in each of January and February so I don't think they've give up on them.
I've always found heat in a public scene to come from a model's nervousness and the reaction of the people around her. But you raise something that is just as important - the uncontrolled and unpredictable part of it. That's huge for me too. Thanks for pointing that out.
I thought about mentioning the Dom thing in my review but I thought it was a personal thing so I didn't. Obviously it isn't personal to me since you share my thoughts. I agree 100% that it makes a difference. I like Princess Donna a lot as a director and actor, but for me BDSM needs a male Dom. Sexist? Probably, but it's important to me to see a male doing the Dom stuff.

Probably about the same for me. I joined more sites in the past year than I normally would because here in Canada we're always under the threat of ISPs imposing bandwidth caps. My ISP doesn't do that now but I figure they will at some point so I'm downloading a lot while I can. I expect that to continue in 2012.

Thanks for the comments. Public nudity is obviously a genre that has the same allure if your straight or gay. But biggest compliant about the genre (but not about Public Disgrace) is that a lot of site somehow manage to make it seem cold and clinical. You'd think that they'd have to work to remove the heat from any porn, but a lot of sites featuring public nudity seem to manage to do it easliy.

I've never streamed from VB, but if their streaming is as good as their downloads I have no reason to think it isn't great. My recollection is that they have several streaming quality options too. My suggestion, though, is that if you have the harddrive space why not download? The ability to stream will end with your membership but the downloads at VB have no DRM so they're yours forever. I realize that many people have various reasons for wanting to stream but consider downloads from there since they're available for the same membership price.
