All good points again. I certainly fit the description of a power users for the first few days of a membership. I'll scour the site for material that interests me, and I'll download that. I won't download something simply because it happens to be on the site. There has to be a reasonable expectation that I'll like what I download. There are several dozen models that I like and if a site has stuff with them I'll download it without question. If I can sort by theme, anal sex, for example, then I'lld o that, but I won't download a scene merely because it has anal sex. If the anal sex scene features a MILF with Double-Ds, then I won't DL that because that type of model doesn't do it for me. So after a few days of downloading madly I'll settle down and be a lot more selective. That's when I start looking at models I don't know in hopes of finding someone who tickle my fancy.

I can see how a DL limit might limit piracy. If a pirate has to take days or months to rip a site, they'll probably avoiding it.

Hi. I think people probably download a lot but not a lot on average, by day. I don't know how the sites manage their bandwidth or what the user stats are like. I would just assume the average user probably doesn't download a large quantity after the first few days of excitement with the new site. The average user probably wouldn't go past 10 GIG a day after that, I suspect.

It's not that the sites don't want power users--money is money. But a limit forces the power users to accept the limit and alter their DL behavior, if they want to subscribe. It would help with detering some types of piracy, as well--I think.

What you're saying doesn't sound like BS at all - it sounds perfectly sensible.

I guess I didn't ever think of most other active buyers as being that much different from me in that they'd find a site that they liked and then download a lot of the content because they actually like it. That describes my relationship with many Kink.com sites. I join frequently and download all the new material because that site offers what I like. The opposite might be a site that specializes in big breasts. If I were tempted to join a site it would likely just be for one or two scenes that I liked and then I'd leave. But I guess I just assumed that most users will actually download a lot. But if that isn't the case, I can understand why I'd be seen as a power user and a less desirable customer. I do realize from some comments made on this site that many of the members are much more selective than me.

It must be a bit of a Catch-22 for sites: they create a niche site and they do it well and then they'd have to hope that people who like that niche won't like everything on the site.

I am not really sure how each site manages their sales. I assume they have hired consultants that analyzed the bandwidth requirements and how this effects the profits.

You are what is termed a power-user. This is neither good nor bad. But I assume that sites prefer not to retain such customers, even though they wouldn't ever publically say so. More DL traffic means you have to purchase more servers or people will complain about slow connectivity etc..

I don't really think anyone would offer this upgrade stratification as the extra charge probably wouldn't justify any possible increase in revenue for offering this.

To me, a site that has DL limits is basically saying they do no want power users who are going to be downloading a lot of content in a short amount of time. Very few sites do this but I think more would like to. They probably don't want to drive away people who think they might be limited, even though they may never really reach daily limits. For sites with DL limits, power-users are certainly welcome to apply, but your requirements are not going to not be met.

Again, everything i offered could be complete BS. That's just my take.

Thanks for the excellent information. Your technical knowledge surpasses mine exponentially. I realize that some people might find this level of information boring, but I'm not one of those.

I hadn't thought of the issue you note with streaming versus downloading, namely that a person streaming the video is unlikely to watch the whole thing, where the person downloading takes the whole file. To add to your argument, even though I download, it's rare for me to watch the scene from start to finish. But where downloading is superior is in being able to access the file at any time without having to have an internet connection or still be a member of the site.

I'm one of the members who keeps coming back to the buffet and who likely looks like a glutton, but I only join sites where I know I'm going to enjoy the material so it just makes sense that if I've put a lot of effort into finding a site I know I'll like that I download a lot. I may seem indiscriminate to the webmaster, but the webmaster can't know the effort I put in to finding that specific site.

I am glad to hear that if there are people like me who use a lot of bandwidth that there are more who don't and the site continues to make money. I'm a porn fan and an active porn buyer and I realize that unless sites make money they won't make more porn.

What do you think of tiered pricing? What if RK offered a $20 membership for streaming and up to 10GB a day and $30 for up to 50GB per day? Would that work? I'm certainly willing to pay for what I get.

If you are a high-volume user then download limits are certainly something negative.

As far as streaming and downloads, they are two different animals. Both, done in high volumes, can slow down connectivity and they both take the same bandwidth in most cases. However, one takes an active time commitment, the other does not.

I suspect you would be hard-pressed to find users who stream entire videos from start to finish in front of their computer, and do so 3-4 times a day. Most people probably only stream certain sections they find interesting and the bandwidth used is probably quite small. Streaming videos real-time requires a large time commitment.

With downloads, you can simply set a number of them going and move on and retrieve them later. No time commitment is involved and you don't sit there watching the download. Most people are probably going to download and watch later. The sites all have to know this and understand it is downloads that consume most of the bandwidth. Streaming probably accounts for a small fraction of useage.

Unlimited downloads are kind of like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Most people probably won't make more than 1-2 passes to the buffet table in a single sitting before they have had their fill. There will always be people who keep going back, however, and I suspect that most site owners don't really care if such consumers move on to other pastures. It is profitable to retain the ones who only make 2 passes.

I have no technical knowledge at all, but how would streaming and downloading be different from a server's perspective? I didn't download any HD material because of the cap and I don't recall if HD was offered by streaming, but if I download a 2GB scene and you stream it, wouldn't that be the same to the server? But... now that I think of it, I could be comparing apples and oranges here too. I recall that a WMV HD scene is less compressed than an mp4, so streaming may even use a higher compression, thereby making your streaming less of a data hog than my downloading.

Still... it seems odd that I'd be cut off after accessing 10GB of data and other users wouldn't.

This is a business that I assume caters to the avg user. Volume is key to profits. I am sure such a business does research using industry data and historical data gleaned from past user behavior when it comes to download figures. The number is likely set based on the needs and behavior of the avg subscriber to such a site. You don't want power users because they are a drain. You want the power users to leave so setting a cap serves a purpose in this regards as well. You make your profits off the avg consumer. Limits likely are set accordingly.

I am not minimizing your frustration but this is probably just what a consultant felt represented the most prudent decision based on profit margins vs retention.

Then again, everything I just offered could be complete bs.

I like to know contexts when I read reviews, whether for cars or movies. It's often hard to tell where people are coming from. Everyone has preferences and varied experiences and this can slew opinions.

As far as the reason for having a limit on dl but not streams, I can only surmise that perhaps this is a means of preventing individuals or networks from easily pirating content? Since bandwidth charges are the same for both methods, this might be the case.

Then again, it could be a way to keep subscribers from bailing after a month-long frenzy of downloading all videos for future use. This would also be a valid explanation.

The last possibility would be related to technical specs. Perhaps there is some odd technical reason. I would not be inclined to think this is the case.

My guess is its a combination of the first 2 above. This would be something I couldn't fault a business for implementing. You want to keep a customer base around and piracy is a big issue for any online media outlet. However, you also have to take into account the competition. Apparently, the owners do not see such a limit as stifling sales or they wouldn't make such a move.

Really interesting, informative and well written review! I like the level of detail and I expecially like your thorough descriptions and how your own tastes impact on how you view the site. That's an important element because it allows a reader to make decisions on how their own tastes will be served by the site. I also liked your letter grades for various aspects. That works well within the context of a full review like this.

I was a RK member here recently and HATED the daily download limit. That tainted everything else about the site for me, and I wasn�t that big a fan of the site to begin with. What I find interesting is that the limit doesn�t apply to streaming. Is it possible that you just didn�t hit the 10GB cut-off? I�ll admit though that the contract speaks to a cap on downloads, not data transfer. If they cap downloads by allow data to stream unfettered, this seems odd and may point to another purpose for the limit. Any thoughts?

Great review! It gives me some confidence to know that another person looks at the site independently and comes to pretty much the same conclusion.

Something you wrote made me realize I missed something in my review. You said that you didn't download any HD files because of the limit. Neither did I and for the same reason. So why should they bother having them at all? The regular wmv files can be in excess of 1GB so I can imagine that the HD ones are much bigger. Is it vanity on their part to think that a member would join and love the material so much that they'd be satisfied downloading five scenes a day?

I also agree that they're a bit ass-obsessed. But... not all ass obsessions are the same. I'm ass-obsessed too but none of the RK sites appealed to me. The RK sites promote big asses. I prefer smaller. But I'd only say no to Alexis Texas if Tanner Mayes was in the room... And oddly for a big network, the only anal site (Captain Stabbin) rarely updates. I can see if they think the theme has run out of steam (pun intended) but why give up on the genre?

Anyway, great review and I really enjoyed reading it. Too bad that like you, it won't induce me to join ever again.

A general thanks to those who alerted me to the download limits in this site. I had been a member before, was about to become a member again but there's no way I would live with a limit like that.

As I wrote in my review some time ago, some of the bigger HD files (and that's all I download) can run between 2 - 4 Gigs a movie. Wouldn't take long to hit the daily limit. More and more sites, in their effort to prevent ?pirating?, are taking all kinds of counter productive measures to prevent this, scaring off potential legitimate subscribers. 10Gigs daily limit? No way!

I used to like you. RK, but no more!

I agree, file sizes would make sense here. But the real problem is the use of an unreasonbaly low limit.

To add icing to the Reality Kings cake, I can't cancel my membership. They use a biller called Secure Billing Worldwide and when I go through the cancellation process and get to the last screen where I can opt to stay with RK at a reduced price or cancel, there are no buttons that allow you to make either choice. This isn't a Reality Kings problem, obviously, but it adds to the frustration I've had with the membership.

Yeah, also if you are going to have a DL limit on the site, it might be useful to list the damn file size. So many times I started to download a file and then was like, oh wait that's too large, I should download the smaller version... I don't recall ever hitting a limit here before either, so perhaps it is a new thing, or at least enforcing it is.

I wonder if the cap is something they've always had but just never enforced until recently? That would explain why some people never hit the limits and some of us did. Or else they just enforce it randomly, which is also a reasonable theory.

Like you, this will probably be my last time at this site. It has become stale and repetitive. I still like some of the sites a bit, but the low, low, low limit added to a mostly bland network means I won't be back. And the fact that they didn't have the courtesy to even reply to my email is just rubbing salt in the wound. I had low expectations when I sent the email so at least I could claim that they met my expectations.

Nice review rearadmiral, I joined just before the holidays, and really wish I hadn't. I have hit the limit every day I have tried at under 10 GB (usually like 9.5), even when I hadn't logged in for several days. I don't know why I keep coming back here, it just seems to go further downhill every year. I think your 75 is appropriate, and will probably change my score to something similar, if not lower.

Also, DTA works at RK, but you have to be careful about losing the queue if the cap kicks in.

No question that porn is a huge Worldwide industry but it's still a small profit industry for most studios and porn companies.

I post regularly on ADT and PU. I sometimes post twice as much on ADT because they are a lot more threads going and far more participating members. PU is still years ahead in regards to the quality of it's posters.

I've been spending a lot of time at ADT reading old threads. It's an amazing site for porn trivia. I haven't posted anything yet, but PU will be my default site for as long as it exists. And the purposes of the sites are completely different, as you point out so one could never replace the other.

The original Captain Stabbin got so many newbies first on screen anal that it's hard to know where to start the name game. That's the main reason why I always came back to his site.

It's true that the porn industry is multi-billion industry but you never read that this is gross profit for the entire planet's porn industry. The other thing that is pure bullshit is when they compare it to the mainstream industry. No offense but there is no comparaison and anyone that says there is has an agenda against porn. Here's some simple examples. Avatar made 2 billions dollars in gross profit from worldwide box office takes. The last 2 Harry Potter movies which were really part 1 and part 2 of the same movie made a combined 2.2 billions gross profit in worldwide box office takes. That's not counting the profit they've made on dvd, Blu-ray and other streaming methods.

P.S: I really like ADT. Not everyone is as polite and nice as hear but the moderator are quick to deativate those that push the line. The bulk of the discussion are on performers and movies so it's good to particiapete here because we mostly talk about sites.

For me, Captain Stabbin isn't about the crew but I have a nautical fetish AND an anal fetish so this site is a sensory overload for me. I do like the original Captain as he's just so lucky and he knows how lucky he is.

I hadn't really given any thought to the economics of mainstream porn. I guess I always thought that it was a great way to get rich fast, but after reading what you wrote that obviously isn't the case. I hear estimated numbers that the porn industry brings in each year, and I recall that the porn industry is reputed to bring in more than Hollywood, but there are tons of studios out there cranking out the titles. And I'm certain that piracy hurts the porn industry more than the mainstream movie business just because of the size of studios.

Still... I suspect that when a star like Tanner does her first anal it will also sell better than the average movie. But the piracy will be more too. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for any Tanner anal scenes that might come out in 2012.

I just signed up for the forums at ADT and there is a lot of useful information there as you said. Thanks for that tip!

It's possible that RK would have loved to make new Captain Stabbin scenes but the people involved with that series stopped doing them a few years ago. RK has done a couple of recent ones but these were with different performers. RK and Bangbros are primarily shot in Florida and I think that can be a good thing but the recent problems with performers being tagged as HIV+ were both in Florida and there have also been some police related issues at a couple of other times and shooting in Florida may no longer be such a geat thing.

When you couple that with the major down turn in the porn industry and I think Brazzer is the only studio with similar content who's actually making any money. I use an anal barometer to do this predicttion. When studios that used to shoot regular anal scenes and now only do them on rare occasion or remaster older ones then they are in financial trouble. Anal is more expensive than standard vags so if a studio shoots mostly that then they are looking to save on production cost.

Now in regards to Tanner. The simple answer is that there are very few studios that can afford to pay her price for an anal scene. Not too mention that very few stuios shoot on a regular basis. Having Tanner do anal in a video is sure to help sales but I read somewhere that dvd sales are very low. Most studio sell about 700-1200 units per most dvd's and the better ones about 1000-2000 units. If they make 10$ on each on these then their gross profit is anywhere from 7000$ to 20,000$. If the dvd has 4 standard b/g scenes with some established performer then the cost for each scene is going to be about 1000$ to 1500$. That means that just the performers are going to cost 4000$ to 6000$. You also have to pay a director, cameraman, editor and the cost of transfer to dvd. Imagine a performer asking for 4000$ for her anal scene. That's a small amount because I read that Breanne Benson wants 7000$ for her anal scene. If you have to pay 7000$ for only one scene then you have to be one of those lucky bastards that gets to sell at least 2000 or more units to even hope to make some profit.

I didn't count my downloads yesterday but I was well in excess of 10GB and maybe even over 20 before I got shut down. I find the variations in the limit more annoying than the limit itself. And I have to admit that I'm pretty pissed that they don't even have the courtesy to reply to my email. I wasn't rude or even remotely challenging or negative. All I did was ask them for some clarification. It seems that like so many mega sites they see customer service as ending once they get a credit card number. It makes those sites that actually do care about customers seem that much better.

I've considered Teen Mega World a few times, and it's on my list of sites to join, but I haven't yet. Knowing that the models are what I like might bump them up a bit.

I had meant to get back to you on the wording in the terms, but the holiday got in the way. My terms say the same as yours and I think you might have nailed it when you said "A site can certainly impose whatever conditions they want, but those conditions should be clear and applied equally to all members." While I like that RK doesn't seem to ever impose the limit on my account, it looks bad on the ones of us that review a site or post a comment that says no download limit then they impose it on others. Even worse is when they let me download unlimited. Let you download less than 10 GB per day one day then let you download much more the next. I have tried to figure up some kind of rhyme or reason for how their DL limit works, but I can't.

And the type of models is another reason PU works so well, if members read multiple reviews. I was ready to be blown away by Teen Mega World after so many high reviews only to be letdown because nearly all the models were slim. RK, on the other hand, as you're seeing is full of curvy women, which is more my preference.

This is a network that I used to keep track of but I notice that in the past year they almost never have any updates that appeal to me and recently the site no longer makes it easy to see their newer scenes. Not too mention that looking for older content is a clkusterfuck. I really wish you had asked the question about the Tanner anal scene prior to joining. I would have given you the bad news and saved you from joining for her anal scene.

P.S: I have some good news on Tanner and anal stuff. She shot one or two movies for Evila Angel which should be released in January.

exotics - I just thought of something else. If you're still a member there now and are willing to do this for me, please check the contract terms the next time you're there. You can access it at the bottom of the main page by clicking "Terms" and the contract comes up. Section VI is on "Membership" and paragraph E is on the download limit. (or you can just search 'download limit' and find it quickly too. It may be that you're even a memmber under a different contract. That makes no sense, but who knows? It might be possible.

This is really strange. You can exceed the maximum by a factor of six and I actually get shut down at 8GB one day. I really hope that the site staff answer my email. I think the questions I asked are fair. But maybe the answer might not be good for you - maybe they'll impose the limit on you too!

I have no idea if distance matters, but I doubt it. Besides, a porn buddy of mine who lives near me also reported that he had no daily limit. My theory was that it was new, but since you still have a membership and don't have a limit that scraps that theory too.

All I download are the wmv files. If HD is available I don't download it. I know there is some rule about "big" files but I don't know what they mean by big files. Does that apply to any file of any format that is over a certain size or does it refer to a particular format only? That would seem a bit odd to allow a member unlimited downloads for massive HD files but cap a guy with a slower connection who is downloading smaller files.

No matter how this turns out it really won't be that big a deal. I'm not out much, and I'd have to admit that after a month I'll have still had my money's worth. And honestly, I'm not all that impressed with the network. I'd like to think that's not just because they imposed a limit on me and some other but not on everyone, but most of the material is pretty cookie-cutter. And the video quality is nothing to get excited about either.

I think your theory about being allowed to accumulate 10GB days for a few days and then using them is interesting. That might just be possible. Arguing against that is once I hit the limit the screen I get says I've exceeded 10GB is a 24 hour period. It still seems like you and some other members are getting a better deal! I hope it continues for you!

If I ever do get a reply to my email I'll be sure to let everyone know what the terms of the limit actually mean.

No answer yet... I think the questions I asked are reasonable and my tone was very respectful, so I'm hoping that maybe, just maybe the site's staff will provide some answers.

I did get unlock after 24 hours and appeared to have the full allotment again. But by "full allotment" I mean that I wasn't actually allowed to exceed 10GB. The first day I was allowed just over 9GB and the second day just over 8GB.

Yeah, I agree about the wiggle room. Someone else had posted that they were told by RK that the limit was between 60-70 big files per day. I have tried hitting it the last two days, but can't. I tried the same thing I had asked you about, downloading the biggest files possible, 48 GB one day, 62 the next. I'm now even wondering about location you download from since I'm not that advanced in technology, I wouldn't know if longer distances cause more stress on servers. Either way, they have always been loose about their rules. To put it in perspective, over 4 memberships this year, I have the entire sites, 8th Street Latinas, We Live Together, In the VIP, CFNM Secret, Mike in Brazil and Mike's Apartment, just add the newest updates when they come out and randomly add from the other sites when it's a model I like. And this too is my lack of technology understanding, but comes from my experience buying hard drives. Amount of gigabytes are rounded or never are the number we see. Seems like member Justme explained it in the forum one time, something about binary numbers, technical gibberish that I don't put forth the effort to fully understand.

Last thing, you may be onto something with the part about downloading from them everyday. I only have 3 days a week that I download and even then I sometimes have more than one site membership, so it could be that my limit, since not downloading sometimes for as many as 6 days in a row, builds up, if it's cumulative. And if I look at my RK folder on my external, it is a total of close to 1 TB this year. Four memberships 10 GB per day x 30 days = 300 GB per membership or 1.2 TB. I'll try a few more times over the next 2 weeks of this membership and see how much it lets me download.

I am an active member of the rk network (after two months, cause I would like to dwn other sub-site of the net that I like), but I am boring and angry.
In some days I can dwn 10 gb till to be' blocked; so I have the entire bundle of 10 the day after.
When I can't dwn 10gb in a day, I have only the difference to ten the day after !!!

If you interested in RK, stay away !!!! :(

On some sites, like Young Legal Porn and ALS Scan imposing such a low limit would mean you could only download a few scenes a day. I agree that with internet speeds and cost today a limit of 60-100GB per day would make more sense. 10GB (or 9 in my case...) doesn't make sense in 2011.

I realize that it is Sunday so I'm not looking for a reply to my questions today, but I do hope they reply and give some clear answers about a policy that is anything but clear. Exotics4me didn't have a cap, and another member here who doesn't post but who is a real-life porn buddy of mine said he never got locked out and downloaded 50+Gb per day.

I'm about 21 hours into being locked out so I'm interested to see what will happen in a few hours. If selphy is right, and I have no reason to think that he isn't, I won't get 10GB access right away but will get it back gradually. That will be a real piss-off.

It does seem very low I agree, sometimes people only get chance to download on certain days and with the bigger file sizes for HD vids , its really not long I bet till you get the limit coming in, 60-100gb a day would be more like it if they really had to have a limit.

It is a big pain in the ass, but at least I knew about it when i joined. I'd be very pissed if I didn't know about it. I can even understand why a site might want to impose a limit, but 10GB per days seems awfully low. With a fiber op connection a member can hit that in an hour.

exotics - I don't think what I'm downloading would qualify as 'big' files. They certainly aren't HD. I was working my way through the newer Captain Stabbin scenes and downloading the only wmv files there. Those are probably larger than the files intended for mobile device users, but they aren't 'big' by today's standards. It may be that you're treated differently because you're a former member. I'm a former member too but I don't think the network was called Reality Kings back when I was there last.

The clause in the terms of membership about the download limit has an awful lot of wiggle room in it for them. They're vague because they say they "may" impose a limit of 10GB per day and up to 15 "big" files. I have no idea what that means. They're also a bit vague on when you get privileges back. I emailed them and asked several questions about what they mean. I was polite and respectful but was looking to have some of the terms clarified. I'll have to admit that sending them an email is also a bit of a test since I think the chances of them actually responding to me are about zero. I suspect that RK is just another faceless mega site with no interest in customer service. But if I'm wrong I'll certainly retract that. And if I get some clarification on how they impose the limit (and on who) I'll report that here for future members.

To top all of this off, I do have to admit to being a little ticked that I got kicked off at just over 9GB when the limit wasn't even triggered. That's a definite breach of the contract on their part.

I'm curious about something. Are you downloading HD videos? I'm a member right now and wasn't even testing it, just general downloading, and downloaded the entire CFNM Secret site. I separated them by model so I don't have a definite number, but I know it had to be upwards of 100 GB total, but there is one catch, I do not download any of the HD videos. In the old days of the download limit, it was only imposed on the "big" files. Those are now the basic wmv files, 640-720 high end res on those videos. I still just download those. I'm wondering since it did used to be specified as "big" if the HD ones have now become a part of the limit instead of the basic .wmv ones?

Either that or maybe it's because I sign up through their promo emails from being a member off and on since 2007-08. The old block didn't even work that way. Used to you would get a message that said "you have reached your daily limit of "big" files" but you could continue to access, you could even download the parts of videos and pictures. Check that out one day and see if they are imposing it on the basic .wmv full scenes. Maybe it's a perk of signing up through their emails?

I can't claim I didn't know it wasn't there, but it is still frustrating to bump up against it. In under an hour of downloading I got a message that I had exceeded the daily limit. The odd thing about that is that they calculate that limit on what you're trying to download, not on what you have downloaded. My total downloads were 9.18GB which isn't in excess of the 10GB limit so they shut you down early.

They next test will be to see if they give me a full 10GB tomorrow at this time or if they unlock the limit over a period of time. I'll report that here.

I've also sent the site a message asking for clarification on several vague terms in the contract re daily limits. I'll let you know if I get answers to those questions.

Finally, I can also report that the daily limit blocks accessing any site on the network. I thought that it may have been possible that they blocked just a site where you came close to 10GB.
