Major Site Scoring Change

We've heard a lot of rumblings recently about this topic and I think most of you will appreciate this update.

Our site rankings were getting a little embarrassing and most of you saw this. Whether it was users trying to be loyal to their favorite solo girl, webmasters urging their members to help them rank higher, or simply site owners creating fake users to boost their own rank... it was time to make a stronger stand against these "potential" shills.

Definition of a shill, as it applies here:

shill –noun
a person who publicizes or praises something or someone for reasons of self-interest, personal profit, or friendship or loyalty.

We anticipated shills from the beginning. We've prepared and taken a few steps already, but this is the BIG change that should help prevent the problematic influence from shills and fake users.

What have we done about it?

Starting NOW, reviews and ratings by registered users with under 5 points (status = Newbie) will no longer count toward the site's score or review count.

How will this help?

1. Previous fake/shill users have mostly added one review and never return. These reviews will no longer count toward the site's score/rank!

2. This will encourage authentic users to at least reach the rookie level (5 points or more) so the reviews (their vote essentially) do mean something and to shows other users they're legit.

3. This will help discourage fake/shill users from even wasting their time writing a review that doesn't count.

Will newbie reviews still be displayed?

Absolutely. It's important to us not to point our fingers at who is and isn't a fake/shill. In this regard, all reviews will still be displayed on our site and now labeled as Newbie. This now tells readers that the user has simply not written many reviews and to keep that in mind.

Why the term "Newbie", even though some of these users have clearly participated in other areas?

This was the term that we knew the majority would understand. We recognize that there are registered users who have been with us for a long time and participate in other ways such as polls, replies, or comments. We don't mean to label them as newbies, but simply their status as a "reviewer". It may not be the perfect term, but we thought it was the most appropriate.

What happens when the potential fake user reaches 5 points?

Then they've definitely outmatched us! lol It's unlikely that such a user would go through the effort. Keep in mind, we usually don't even award a user a single point if the review appears heavily slanted (see our review rules). Readers should continue to use their own judgement on which users to trust or not.

Is that it?

Yep, this single change should have a major impact on the site rankings! Have a look around, you'll notice a major difference.

Always know that we're always looking to improve the system and make changes that make sense. If this change proves to not be as effective as we had hoped, we'll ammend it or add to it.

Look for more updates coming soon, including the very controversial "NO" trust rating. Hint: Comment will soon be required. :)

apoctom (145) Great job, guys! This was a very creative way to keep the ratings from being trashed by "shills." I didn't think that there was anything to be done since we don't want to have the admins censor different reviews. But y'all have come up with a very ingenious way to limit their impact on PU. Keep up the good work.

boblond20 (1) I appreciate your attempt to make scoring more representative of reality but there is a downside to this as well. I reviewed a site specifically because I thought that the official review was dated if not 'way off the mark.' I am not a professional critic nor do I wish to become one. Just browsed your site and found a review that I really disagreed with. I did a review of my own in order to right what I considered a review that could mislead viewers and cause them to not consider a site that I considered the best of its' kind.

If viewers continue to read all reviews and not just go with the official score there will be no problem. But if viewers read an official score and take it as reason to steer away from a site that is 'best of class' then I believe that it defeats the reason for your site.

Perhaps official scores should be given in a commentary form only and the official score left to the customer reviewers (the Amazon model). It wouldn't be perfect but probably better than the alternative. If you find an obvious shill deal with it directly.

Good luck. I'll be looking to see if your reviews help me or not in the future.

Hi boblond,

You definitely point out the negative effect of this new policy, and you make a valid point too!

The casual user like yourself who chooses to review only a site or two (legitimately) will suffer from this change. This is the trade-off and a necessary one I believe.

In the end, the newbie reviews are still exposed to users interested in reading beyond the scores (which I hope most users do). Everyone continues to have a voice and users who take the time to move past the newbie level (which doesn't take too much effort) will gain the scoring privelege.

Your opinion about ranking sites by our official score (I assume u mean browsing TBP) is just how we think user's want to browse our site. I might be mistundestanding your point, but our site is very flexible to allow user's to browse sites in almost any logical form though. Nearly every review site in our business sorts by their score, it just makes the most sense.

It's important to note we also link to other review site's reviews, and of course the reviews here at PornUsers (even the newbie reviews). We definitely realize users will disagree with our reviews (and rightly so sometimes), which is why try to offer so many site facts, options, and opinions. This will only get better too as we grow.

Tough choices are required in our position and we take great consideration before making them. I wish it didn't have to negatively affect anyone, but unfortunately that's the rub sometimes.

All the best.

jd1961 (95) This is great! You'll notice that the rankings have changed RADICALLY, and now reflect reality more closely. The shills will have to do a lot of hard work now to distort the rankings!

Thanks for the reply Rick. OK, I think that I understand you and I accept that you are dedicated to helping users find sites that will appeal to them.

The only point that I made that I think you might have missed was the one in which I suggested that the site be ranked by the user rater's scores only and not by your appointed reviewers. I referred to amazon.com which rates their products by the number of purchases that have been made by customers on their site. They provide professional reviews but list the reviews by the number of 'stars' that their customer/reviewers assign to the products not by an arbitrary ranking by their staff. These reviews then become 'owned' by their users (a good thing for both users and site owners I believe).

I wish you and your staff the best and hope that you provide us 'porn users' with a useful service. This will of course be based upon your service getting it right when pointing us to the 'good' sites and not keeping us away from sites that we might prefer by giving us bad advice. That means that you and I have the same goal and I'm just asking a question about implementation.

Cheers,
BB20

BB20, now I'm hearing you more clear. :)

I know why I was confused now. What you're suggesting is how we already have set things up here at PornUsers.com.

If you browse our porn site rankings at PornUsers.com, then the scores are based "solely" on the user's only. We do show the score from our veteran editors at TBP, but only as a reference.

Click "Browse Sites" from the pornusers.com homepage to view the rankings based on the user reviews. You can also click the categories and view the ranks by niche also.

If you browse the sites at TheBestPorn.com, then that score is based "only" on our own editor's reviews. We like giving options. :)

Thanks for explaining what you meant and I hope you enjoy everything we have to offer here. If you have any other questions, definitely hit us up.

Regards.

djwolf (61) Yeah, this is a good idea which should help keep the ratings as genuine as possible (difficult to make it 100% reliable). I also agree that users should not just give 'NO' trust ratings without a reason why. You're all doing a grand job of keeping this the best porn review site on the net!
