I checked with an editor and there's really no standard.
They did say that if the watermark is clear (pic able to be seen through it) it tends toward the "medium" specification whereas a big solid watermark would be judged as large.

Thanks for the reply and for getting in touch with the site. It definitely helps with the watermark, but I'm still wondering what's up with the pictures that don't show. I run Firefox with NoScript and am used to having to "temporarily allow all" at times just to see everything on a page. That didn't work here.
