THIS IS AN UPDATED REVIEW - DETAILS IN BOTTOM LINE
+ TBP discount, although the regular price of $14.99 a month isn't bad either
+ Download manager compatible
+ A wide variety of content (however, see cons below)
+ Able to search by fetishes, Sex Acts, Style (i.e. Amateur, Couple, Vintage, etc.), Age, Body Features (Shaved, Skinny, Natural...), Ethnicity and Gay
+ Tabs for DVDs, Amateur Video, New, Scenes and Favorites (You can save scenes to Favorites)
+ Under Amateur Video, it's split between Homemade and what the site calls Pro-Am.
+ Ipod and PSP downloads, in addition to the more usual avi, wmv and mpg formats
+ Flash Previews
+ HD access available (extra cost)
+ Download speed issue seems to have been eliminated |
| Cons: |
- Some of the videos are available only as clips AND, in some cases, all of the clips don't even add up to the complete video.
- Some niche content is very limited
- Video resolution can be pretty much hit or miss. Most are good, some pretty bad, even for "standard" resolution |
| Bottom Line: |
I'd joined Skinvideo back in the "old days", when it first split from Guba. Back then, it was mostly a collection of small clips with an occasional long clip thrown in. Still had a wide variety of stuff to look at, so it was more a "thrill of the hunt" kinda thing. Good ol' Cheap thrills.
Well.. Skinvideo's come a long way. Maybe in response to sites like Videobox, it's been updated to include a lot of full-length material across a wide variety of niches. I hadn't seen the PU discount here but rejoined when they sent me an email, telling me about the new style of the site. I checked it out with the free week that they gave me and decided to stay for the month. As someone else mentioned, there's some stuff on here, like a few Vintage flicks, that I haven't seen elsewhere.
From what I've downloaded so far (about 50 gigs in 3 weeks), the videos look good. Most of the files are in the 720x 480 range, but there've been more than a few that look pretty bad on a 32" screen. The site does offer one upsell - HD access for another $10 a month. I can't comment on that part of it because I didn't take 'em up on it. But I will say it was nice that they allow you to hide the prompts for the extra cost - a nice gesture, unlike other sites that keep the upsells constantly in your face.
*****UPDATE CHANGES*****
I actually let this one rollover into a second month which is rare for me on ANY site. Maybe to celebrate the end of the Bushreich here in the U.S., I figured even a poor man could afford $10 :-)
+ Originally had speeds running in the 300 range, even with an accelerator. Now I regularly get speeds of 1200-2000k/s. More than reasonable.
+ Updates every hour, even though the amount of material added varies a lot is is hard to get a fix on. I've seen as few as 2 scenes, as many as 8 at a time.
+ Totally missed the fact that they offer a 3-day, full-access trial for $2.95
+ Maybe because it doesn't interest me, I overlooked the picture access available for another $4.99 a month. Seems to have the same category breakdowns as the video. Includes zip files for entire galleries. I don't see where the pictures are available seperately though.
+ Offer to drop to/stay at $10 a month if you continue membership
+ No advertising!
- Even though I'm putting SkinVideo near the top of my list, there are still a lot of clips that aren't labelled with the name as they're downloaded. It takes a lot of clicking to find out which files make up a particular movie AND if all the clips are even online to complete a scene. (I've got a few I can't seem to complete) Those are fairly big annoyances in my book. I think either an advanced search engine or a better way to arrange those clips is in order and, of course, it would nice to be able to find all the clips in a scene.
All in all, I think SkinVideo is definitely well worth checking out. They've obviously done a lot of work on it over the years and it shows - and shows well. |
