No site which wants my business can charge one cent for previews. Previews are just that, I don't pay to see previews of regular movies and TV shows. They are supposed to be the bait which gets me to join a site, and they often do. Self-defeating if you ask me... I won't do business with any site that does this and I urge others not too as well - that will soon finish off this stupid idea and ensue it doesn't become too widespread. We porn consumers have a lot of power and it's time we used it - I am sick of being treated as anything less than a paying customer. In no other industry do people tolerate such lousy service and we shouldn't either. Porn customers are entitled to respect, but we'll only get it if we demand it! | |

Thank you for that. I'd be happy to pay a £10 initial charge as with the Spanish bank charging me £1.50 per transaction at the moment I'd start saving after a few subscriptions. I suppose I always wondered if these cards worked OK for such subscriptions, as they're usually in dollars or euros... do I have to get a version designed for travel and use of any currencies? Do they make any extra charges like the bank does? I always wondered if some porn sites wouldn't take them as they wouldn't be able to rebill you on them as easily as a credit or debit card... It sounds quite simple - can I just buy one at Phones4U and then top it up as and when? To be honest it could be useful generally as I try to use PayPal as much as I can for my regular net shopping and more and more vendors take it - so I could use the prepaid card for my porn and any other purchases where they don't take PayPal and then I'd never have to enter my main debit card details on the web again, which would be great as I've twice had internet fraud on my account. | |

Yup exactly the same here - same bank debit card. I don't have a credit card and I don't want one. I did look into pre-loaded debit cards but I found them very complicated and they have their own charges - also had to decide which ones were genuine as they all seemed quite unknown companies to me. | |

A useful idea, but I was put off as I'm sure I read somewhere that if you send credit card details over a VPN, a unscrupulous VPN operator can intercept them, so I'd be worried about security. | |

Hi Cap'n - yes I'm afraid it seems to be the latest new charge banks and credit card companies are introducing! I've noticed them appearing on my bank statements lately on my debit card. They're not super-high but they do add up. I wish more sites would offer the option to pay in local currency, it would make it so much easier. Another problem I have is since I had fraud on my account, my bank is super-sensitive to any suspicious transactions. That's great of course but it also means when joining a porno site, I'm often paying in dollars or euros and the payment is usually processed off-shore, which looks suspicious to the bank. So the payment is usually declined and I have to go through a security call from my bank to confirm it was genuine and then do it all again. I appreciate the security but I wish there was a way to do the security procedure first to let them know I was about to do it - at least that way I'd only have to go through the payment process once. It won't stop me buying porn but it is an added expense to buying it and something porn studios should bear in mind - even British ones which will ultimately have to convert the dollars into pounds at their own expense usually only accept dollars. It means they pay more and so do their customers. I guess the payment processes don't make it easy to accept anything other than dollars. Still anything that adds to my overall porno bill means I will ultimately buy less porn, which is bad for everybody. At a time when they're whining about tube sites and illegal downloads, they don't always make it so easy for honest people to actually pay for their product! If only porn studios would treat their paying customers with more respect they might find piracy is less of an issue! Thanks for your contribution Cybertoad - you were one enterprising young man there! Wow! I can just imagine how I would have felt coming across such a treasure trove! Heaven! Thomas - tell us a little more! You were lucky that you could get magazines with the models you wanted - I would have killed for gay mags back then but hey, at last I found them! A pity you don't have your first mag any more - I find they really can bring back some powerful memories and the feelings that went along with them. The porn nostalgia thread! This idea got some support on another thread I started, and I decided it would be a good one. This thread is to discuss porn nostalgia. Tell us about your earlier memories of porn - where did you first see it? How old were you? How did it make you feel? My own porn story starts when I was very young and found a porno mag in an abandoned house I was looking in! I must have been about 12 and just starting puberty and to have sexual feelings. It was a straight porno mag, but it got me very excited just to know such things existed! I looked at it there but didn't dare take it home! I didn't see any more porn until I was older, but in the meantime I used to look at the underwear sections of my mom's home-shopping catalogues! Sometimes I'd look at the men then turn to the women just before I came - to try and convince myself that's what had turned me on and I wasn't really gay! I wasn't kidding myself though! When I got to be about 15 or 16, I'd buy the odd straight porn magazine in my local stores. I didn't know gay porn even existed, and I hoped some of the mags might have some men in them having sex with the women. Most didn't - I tried looking at the women but although the sexual and "dirty", furtive nature of the magazines excited me, really the women did nothing for me. One magazine featured a series whereby a reader was chosen to pose with a model - you never saw his cock but it was better than nothing! I was lucky to be able to buy porn mags - you had to be 18 but I bought my first when I was 15 or 16. I was never challenged - I just looked older than I was. Then I found some men's bodybuilding magazines, which featured the models just in g-strings. They were the closest I could get to gay porn so I bought them for a while. I still had no idea gay porn existed until I was 16 and we went on our final family holiday together with my parents and sibling, and I saw gay porno mags on display in a department store - this was Amsterdam, and they are much more liberal about these things! It was around this time (about mid-1990s) that softcore porn mags for women were launched in the UK. I went to town one day and found a newsagent (I don't know if they have them in North America - a small store which sells newspapers, magazines, tobacco and sweets/candy) in the city centre which sold gay porn mags! I was so excited! I went into town but I was shocked to find the magazines cost £4.99 (probably about US$8-9)! I'd assumed they cost the same as the straight ones which were less than half that price. I didn't have enough money! I'd only got £5 but I needed bus fare home and it was too far to walk! The frustration was incredible! So I got a copy of "For Women" magazine, which was about £2.99 I think - I had just enough. The assistant was a kind middle-aged lady who looked kind of surprised at my choice, but after a few seconds she recovered from her shock, wiped the shocked expression from her face, and made a big effort to be nice and even offered to put it in a paper bag for me! I'll never forget her or that little shop - sadly gone now - but it was a really nice moment and she was kind to me. That magazine was a revelation - it only had about 3 models in it and very softcore - no erections, just naked men - they tried to make it seem like the nude pics were just incidental and the rest of the magazine was just normal women's magazine articles. I still have that magazine and I wouldn't part with it though it seems tame now, as it means a lot to me and brings back memories! Anyway I still wanted proper gay porn, so I waited till my 17th birthday and spent my birthday money from relatives (sorry, grandma and aunties!) on TWO gay porn mags, costing the grand total of £9.98 - a lot of cash to me! I had to go to a different store - no kind lady in this one! The assistants were male and obviously not gay-friendly, though of course they were happy to take gay peoples money! I waited around until the store was quietish, but it was never entirely quiet being in a busy city centre (downtown?!). They gave me funny looks and I knew they were talking about me as I left, but I didn't care - I had my first real GAY porn! That was nirvana - one of the magazine had stills of two men having sex with each other - it's hard to describe how incredible that was! Still pretty softcore - in those days even gay mags didn't show erections in the UK so the sex was suggestive - you didn't actually see a cock in a mouth or an ass, but it was enough for me! I hid my porn underneath my dresser draws - there was a space in the bottom if you pulled the bottom drawer out. Finally they started selling softcore gay porn in mainstream stores like HMV - record stores which also sold videos. I'd buy these VHS tapes - they cost about £19.99 on first release but you could sometimes pick up older titles for as little as £4 - 5. Again I wasn't 18 but nobody ever challenged me! I still have and remember which was my first softcore tape. Although they sound lame, the lack of explicitness did mean the directors had to be creative, and there was a lot of slow stripping as once the guy was naked there wasn't much more you could show - so in many ways the videos were more erotic than hardcore porn today, which has no build-up - everyone is naked straight away, so some of the sexiness and teasing element has been lost which is sad - and why I can still enjoy the occasional old softcore video even when I can watch much harder stuff with real sex in it! This was back in the olden days of porn - in the UK censorship laws were so strict you still couldn't show an erection, so again all sex was implied - fucking and sucking was filmed from behind so all you saw was an ass going up and down, never the actual cock going in. Frustrating, but still pretty strong stuff for me and it just meant a lot to see men having sex with each other, implied or not - I now knew I wasn't the only one who wanted this and other men really have sex with each other! I forget when hardcore porn was legalised in the UK. They introduced a new "R18" video classification I think the in the late 1990s. This classification can only be sold in licensed sex-shops, and still has some restrictions you don't see in other countries porn, but it allowed erections and full sex to be shown for the first time. They seemed to be very cautious at first, allowing R18s to be released for a limited period, but the early R18 porn was over-catious - they'd show erections but only briefly, and oral sex but only for a few seconds - and anal sex was still implied rather than fully shown. I guess they were testing out what was possible. Then it seemed to disappear for a while, then the law was clarified and the first full-sex R18 videos came out around 2000. Technically these can still only be sold in licensed sex-shops, but European Union law means you can order them online via another European Union country, usually the Netherlands, so you get websites which sell them marketed direct to the UK, but despatch them via another EU country. Of course the internet has made video classifications almost irrelevant, and since broadband was introduced at decent speeds, you can now enjoy internet porn from around the world. I rarely buy porn DVDs now, though I occasionally still do if it looks hot and it's reasonably priced - the price has come down a lot thanks to the internet. I also like to support the gay sex stores as I don't want them to disappear. Whoops, this turned into kind of a novel! Hope I haven't bored everyone! It's funny - looking at some of the earliest tapes as quite nostalgic for me because I can clearly remember which were the first ones I bought - until I was 16 I didn't even know gay porn existed, and it blew my mind when I first saw it - especially as I was still coming to terms with being gay. I hate streaming-only sites and don't understand their appeal at all. Streaming is fine for a quick preview to help me decide whether I want to download it, so I am happy to have streaming as an option on a site, but streaming only? Forget it! I think the one thing I heard about streaming-only which I kind of understood was that it kept the stuff off your hard-drive - some people are paranoid about that kind of thing and of course it does take up a lot of space. I guess just accessing it whenever you want, and being able to clear your browsing history, cookies etc. makes some people feel more secure. Still, it annoys me when a site is streaming-only - I was only caught once and that's when I didn't realise such a thing existed! Fool me once - I've never joined a streaming-only site since - no matter how hot. I check first on PU or TBP and if it's streaming-only I don't even check out the previews - not interested. I guess people are used to the idea of streaming from tube sites, but those are free so you don't expect to own the content. I guess it's more akin to renting a DVD instead of buying one - but then renting one was always cheaper than buying it, and it tended to be for something you only saw once. Streaming sites are often just as expensive as download sites, so there's no saving. I suppose if you only watch each movie once or a couple of times and don't intend to watch it again it's okay, but I can watch the same movie over and over if it's hot enough, and I still like to own what I pay for. Plus I find streaming frustrating - it's rarely fast enough for me so I often get stutter, out-of-synch audio, slow downloading etc. etc. At least if I download something then however slow it was, and however long I had to wait, once I have it I can skip through it without any issues. I do understand why some studios are reluctant to allow downloads with piracy being as it is. One thing I didn't think might be an idea as a compromise between the two would be a sort of "cloud" site whereby you joined for free, got a username and password, paid for whatever content you wanted, and then that available to stream whenever you wanted permanently. You'd have to pay for new content as you wanted it, but content you'd already paid for would remain permanently available to stream but not download. Although I'd still prefer a download option, I would consider joining such a site - though it would have to be very hot, and I'd still expect it to be cheaper overall than a download site. Old VHS porn - do you still have it? I was clearing out some of my old stuff today and I was kind of amazed at how much old porn I had amassed over the years! I'm only in my 30s but I've been buying porn since I was about 15, and I started getting VHS tapes when I was around 16 or 17. I was too young to buy them of course but always looked younger than my age! Anyway I seem to have hundreds of old VHS tapes. Some of them I remember as being hot and I so I still want to keep them. I still have a VHS player. Still I don't have a great amount of room, so I don't know what to do. I guess I should sort through the tapes and get rid of old ones I no longer want, but it seems kinda awkward to know how to get rid of them. I gave a load of non-porn VHS tapes to my local charity shop (I think my North American friends call them goodwill stores) and they seemed happy enough to take them though I don't know how many people would buy them now. However, I gave those away because I now have them on DVD. Some of my old porn was never released on DVD so I want to save them. I guess eventually my VHS player will die so I should maybe buy a kit to convert them into a computer file or something, though I'm not sure about this. The technical and also the legal side - is it okay to make a backup copy? If so, do I have to keep the tape to prove I bought a copy legally or can I then dispose of the tape? The ones I don't want though - what do I do with them? Just throw them away? I can't give them to a charity shop, and even freecycle seems kind of inappropriate! I did wonder about a Craigslist ad - they allow personal sex ads so I'm sure they'll allow that too. That way I could make sure whoever picked them up was over 18. Ebay don't allow them to be sold and I can't think of any other way of getting rid of them. I also feel kinda nervous about putting out all those tapes for the bin men (garbage men?!). Anyone else have old VHS porn? Ever watch it? Will you keep it and if not, how do you propose to get rid of it? | |

Are you sure it was Verotel who rejected your credit card? If your card is working normally everywhere else and your account is in good standing, it's more likely your credit card issuer declined the transaction as potentially fraudulent to protect you. This is very common - I often get my card declined via Verotel and other sites, but it's the credit card company doing it because it looks suspicious to them - for example it's in a foreign country and a foreign currency. They do a security call, I tell them the transaction was genuine, I confirm they declined the transaction the first time and simply pay again - this time they are expecting it so they allow the transaction to go through. I'd talk to your credit card company - tell them the transaction you tried was genuine. | |

Anyone like to see this for streaming-only sites? Streaming-only sites are my biggest bugbear in porn today. I don't want to join a site where I can't download my favourties to keep, especially when so many charge the same as sites that do allow you to download. In listings, The Best Porn gives you little warning badges for sites which tell you if the site uses DRM, has cross-sales, or has a very limited trial. As streaming-only sites are in some way worse than DRM, which at least allows you to download in some way even if restricted, would anyone agree with me that they'd like to see TBP and PU use a similar warning badge in the listing for streaming-only sites? That way I can dismiss the site without getting my hopes up only to find I can't download. A similar badge for sites with no independent billng merchant might also be good as I won't use those sites either - don't trust them. I'd love to encourage sites to allow downloading and use trusted independent billers and I think this could help. Anyone agree? | |

Thanks for the useful replies. TBH I mainly bought the drive to backup my porn as that's pretty much the only stuff I would hate to lose on my laptop - I don't really keep anything else - my e-mails are all on webmail and I don't have many other files. I did the backup because everyone seems to say that you should back up things, but I don't really understand what a backup does. It seems to be some emergency thing if the laptop stops working. But then I think well if my laptop - which is only a cheap one anyway - ever breaks down then as long as I have the files then what the hell, I'll buy a new one! There seems little point in trying to save a cheap laptop and if I have all the files I need, I'm not sure I need a backup. Maybe I should delete the backup and just transfer my porno files to it. My main hard disk is so low on space its starting to slow my system down, so I could always transfer all my porn, delete the porn I'm least concerned about from my main laptop to make room - that way I have my favourite porn on my laptop and backed up on my external drive, and my less-favoured porn just on the external drive to access when I want it. I could get a second external drive purely as a backup device, but I'm still not 100% convinced I need it. I suppose what I'm asking - in my usual waffling way - is there something vital about a full system backup that I'm missing or haven't considered? | |

External hard drive advice please? Hey guys I'm not very technically minded but I wondered if someone could help with some dumb questions I have! For ages I knew I should get an external HD to back up my laptop and porn but I never bothered. Then I dropped my laptop - it's survived really well but it reminded me I really needed to do it! Plus I joined a load of sites at once which had some great content. I realised my 320Gb laptop hard drive only had about 30Gb of space left, largely because of my porn collection! So I finally got a 1Tb external portable drive from Western Digital. I've hooked it up today and used its own software to back up my computer fully, so that's all fine. However it seems to create a backup file you can only access in the event of an emergency, like a hard-drive failure. My thinking was to use it to store my porn collection on so I could maybe delete some off my main hard drive. I guess if I did that then I still wouldn't have a true backup for my porn as I'd just be transferring it from my computer hard drive to my external one. So now I'm copying over my porno folders directly to the external drive, so I can access the files from the external drive directly. Then I can delete from my my main laptop drive. Am I doing anything wrong or missing something? Should I maybe use this drive purely to backup my system and get a second one purely to store porn on? That way I'd have two external drives which would both have my porn on, so I'd have a backup, but I could use one purely for backup and one purely to store porn, and leave my laptop main HD with more space? I don't really understand the backup thing. It seems to backup everything on my PC but I don't know how I'd access it and get it all working again if my PC hard drive failed. It sounds a good idea Otoh but I was put off using VPNs as I read that putting your credit card details through one could potentially allow them to be seen - I don't know if this is true but maybe someone more techy than me can confirm or deny? | |

Only happens very occasionally on my Firefox/Win 7 combo. If anyone has RealPlayer installed, it turned out to be the reason Firefox was constantly crashing on me - uninstalled it and don't miss it, now I hardly ever have browser crash. | |

I actually based my comment below about preferring Verotel on what you said without really thinking about it, but then I realised I'd never had a problem with regional billing with Verotel, only CCBill - hadn't noticed it before! So do Verotel specifically not do regional pricing then? Sounds like they're a better company all-round for the user and the webmaster which can only be a good thing. | |

I'd like more info about billing processors. I've used CCBill and Verotel before, both without issue, but I'd never heard of Epoch and Segpay and so tended to avoid them. I would never use a site which used its own billing system - some I would love to join but no way. Independent processor or forget it! I prefer Verotel to CCBill - no regional pricing and I find their customer support is actually quicker and more polite. Never had a specific issue with CCBill but Verotel seem better to me. I wonder if PU would consider a section which allowed us to review billing processors? Well, perhaps more of a "comments" section as I wouldn't expect the reviews would need to be as thorough or long as for porno sites, but it would be useful. A simple list of billing companies I know I can trust would be great. | |

Hmmm. I know where you're coming from rearadmiral. It's only fairly recently I began to actually join porno sites again - I joined a handful a long time ago when I first got the net - it seemed to be mainly AVS services then which don't seem as big now - but I guess the slowness of my dial-up connection put me off a little. I only really got back into them a couple of years ago at most, and it was this site which gave me the confidence to join them as I feel safer checking them out here first and learnt about reliable independent billers etc. It's certainly true I've found myself going back to a handful of core sites I enjoy - I rarely stay a member of one for more than a month or two. I think my record is three months in a row, but once you've seen their archive material, especially for sites which don't update or don't update very often, it's simply much poorer value to hang around - it's a bit of a flawed pricing model really. I guess I haven't joined nearly as many sites as you have so I guess I will get to a point where I'm relying on old favourites more - I try not to be a member of too many sites at once and to limit my porno budget. Still, for now there are so many interesting sites out there, I enjoy a change and trying new sites out, so I think I'll me joining a lot of new sites for a while. I still have joined old favourites which I haven't been a member of for a few months in preference to new sites though. Sites with good preview pages help here - I think some of them worry about giving too much away for free, but I find sites with poor preview pages simply don't give me enough to want to join. Sites which update their preview pages as they update the actual site let me know how often they update and give me teasers of what they have - so often I've rejoined a site I've been a member of previously because the last few updates look especially hot. Really scary! Which site? Have you signed up to another one in their network? If I were you I'd cancel your card company ASAP and get that card cancelled and dispute that charge. Tell them what happened. Then when you get a new card I'd stay clear of that and any affiliated sites. Also do a full virus scan on your computer just in case. It's true - porno sites bitch about free download sites but their customer care skills can be so poor they're not exactly encouraging people to join them fairly! | |

Thanks to everyone for their help, I will look into the video players and add-ons you've suggested and try and use them to include in future reviews. Rearadmiral you make a particularly good point and I will keep on just including my own subjective opinion on how good the video looks regardless of technical quality. One last question - what is considered a reasonable bitrate? I know how to find it out now, but I have no clue what's poor and what's good. Anyone give me a rough idea, perhaps in ranges - for example 100 - 1,000 poor, 1,000 - 2,000 average etc? Just so I have some idea what an "average" bitrate would be so I know if a site is above or below what you'd generally expect. Thanka so much for everyone's help again, this has got to be one of the most helpful and polite communities I've ever found online - ironic when we're all porno lovers and a lot of people would consider us degenerates - we're bigger on old-fashioned courtesy and manners than most! I always get confused about display resolutions - I know generally the higher the better but isn't such a high resolution like that on a relatively small screen going to make everything tiny and difficult to see? I thought only big monitors could handle huge resolutions - or am I hopelessly behind the times?! | |
