Digitally Remastered Classic Pornography

Messmer's recent comment (see above) got me thinking about HD content in general and how most of my Blu-Ray collection consists of Hollywood movies that long predate the digital age. This of course is because they used real film, which has a reasonably high resolution. That made think that much of my absolute favorite porn, that which comes from the 70s and 80s, was frequently shot using film.

So the topic question is simply this:

Why aren't we seeing high definition, digitally remastered, blu-ray copies of old pornography?

Have these old film reels been preserved? Is it simply a lack of demand? Or have these cultural treasures been lost? I, for one, would love to see Marilyn Chambers in "Insatiable" in glorious high definition with proper colour accuracy and all that. I would think that a some of it is that the film reels/masters have been lost, and the other is that porn DVDs/Blu-Rays really don't sell well at all in this age of internet streaming, even the most popular releases, and it costs a lot of money to fully digitize and remaster a movie like that. Especially with movies like Insatiable where I'm pretty sure the original company that made it went out of business and the rights are probably owned by a holding company, I don't think they're willing to take that financial risk.

^I think the word lost is probably the most appropriate since the reels must still exist somewhere but the persons who knew that information are either not talking or they are dead now. How many of the great porn cinematogrepher have we lost in the last 2 decades? They must have had copies of their movies so what happened to them?

There are tons of mainstream Hollywood movies from years gone by that were lost to time until someone made this miraculous discovery in a storage area. I don't know if the same could happen to those lost porn movies but one can always hope.

I believe that there is a huge market for these remastered porn movies. Maybe not so much for the dvd/Bluray market but a definetely for any download website. Long live the Brown Coats.

I saw The Story of O in the movies when it came out in the 1970s. I bought 2 different versions/copies of the movie on DVD, and neither version came anywhere close to the clarity of the original film that I saw. My guess is that even when a porn film became famous or made a lot of money, nobody thought to preserve pristine copies of the original movie, because nobody was thinking that VHS or DVD copies would be invented and make those original master-films worth a lot of money. ^Is it possible that the dvd's you saw were actually made from a vhs copy instead of the original 35mm print? Long live the Brown Coats.

Not knowing the process to digitally remaster a film, could "cost" be a factor? If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

I don't know how the DVDs (The Story of O) were made, what the source material for the DVDs was. But these were not bootleg DVDs. I am pretty sure I bought them on Amazon.

But every so often, when you read the Amazon consumer reviews of different movies, the people talk about the poor quality (visual, sometimes sound as well) of some movies.

So yes, I would think that the DVDs I bought could have been copied from VHS tape instead of from an original 35mm print.

But I doubt that any high quality copies of the original 35mm prints still exist. Otherwise, I would think, they would have made a commercial DVD that would be selling on Amazon or some other site.

But then again, there can be questions of legal ownership of these old movies, that interfere with newer DVD copies being released.

But that's a separate issue. Because I bought my 2 different versions/copies from Amazon, which does not sell bootleg copies of movies.

I don't think TV Networks would buy bootleg copies of movies, either. I was very disappointed recently when one channel re-broadcast "The Story Of O" and it was a blurry, dark mess compared to the one I saw originally.

It wouldn't surprise me that some of the content has been lost or there are ownership disputes over it, but some of it has got to be around and available for HD conversion I would think. I'm not arguing that they have to get it on to Blu-ray specifically, post it online for HD streaming perhaps. It seems strange that so many of these movies are being released online or in DVD formats and are clearly just digital conversions of old Video masters, not the original Film masters. Expensive - I don't doubt that. A basic, high resolution 2K scan of one 80 minute film at 35mm with sound, costs $6,097.79 through this company. That is with no restoration. I imagine the restoration process will cost more.

That said, if you had a monthly membership, released one movie every week or two weeks, that price would spread out across the membership pretty easily. VideoBox could easily afford to create a Digitally Remastered Classic movies premium channel, I think. It is certainly a channel I'd be happy to financially support. What do you suppose Jonni Darkko spends to shoot a two disc classic like Throat Fucks 4? and then sell if for 14.95 with an online membership to Evil Angel dot com? 13 models at what? 500 bucks a model? a 1000? If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

That's a very good point - I've never really added up the costs for a standard Gonzo movie. They are probably dropping a minimum of nearly $10k each time. Frequently probably more than that. No wonder they sometimes shoot 2 or 3 movies on the same day with the same performers. From a business perspective it makes sense. Artistic integrity, eh, not so much.

Still, we just need to convince a company with the studio connections and enough money in the banks that there is a market for Digitally Remastered classic porn. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" ¡ Updated Link with Live Video filmed in Copenhagen in 1967 !

Maybe 80% of the value of watching a movie is the visuals, crystal clear or exciting images or whatever.

Maybe 20% (or less) is the soundtrack, which can add to the movie through the music, and the sounds of what the visuals are showing.

Watching a blurry, dark mess of The Story of 0 would be a major disappointment, or a waste of time.

The visuals (and the story, to a lesser degree) are what you are enjoying. But a dark messy visual movie is just a waste of time. Especially with a movie like The Story of O.

Needless to say, it was a major disappointment since "The Story Of O" was not only a favorite read but one of my favorite movies as well. Kink.com and others (as good as they are) could learn a great deal about how subtle BDSM with a good story can be a major turn on. I am still trying to find the ebook, but Amazon only carry a very different story under someone else's name. At least according to the disappointed reviews from other readers.

You can get a new paperback edition of "The Story of O" from Amazon for $10 or less, including shipping.

I don't know about a Kindle version.

But I liked the movie version better than the novel version. The ending of the movie version was more upbeat than the novel. And the heroine (or the main female character, if you don't consider her a heroine), was much stronger or less self-destructive, in the movie than in the novel.

Whenever I read a question like this then I always go back to my trusted source which is Kink. They have a section where they post the rates for the different types of scene the model may be expected to do. The general consensus is that their rates are pretty accurate. Based on Kink rates then a b/g scene with oral or vaginal sex is between 700$ and 900$ while a b/g scene with oral and vaginal or anal sex is 900$ to 1100$. My guess would be that the 700$ is your basic oral sex only rate so that Jonni Darkko Throat Fuck 4 movie costed him 7700$ for just the talent since there are 11 girls in it. Now it's possible that Jonni was more generous than Kink and he gave them more money but my gut feeling would be that since times are hard and this is only an oral scene then he may have given them less than 700$.

The one thing you can be pretty certain is that he didn't spend more than 7700$ for the talent. Add the cost for the extra help in shooting the movie and you are probably talking about a movie that cost 10,000$ to make. Now the amount of money that he makes from said movie is a garded secret because he may film them but the movies could all belong to EA and they simply pay him a salary and maybe a bonus based on dvd/Bluray sales. The days where directors made millions are gone. These days most of them struggle to make a living. Long live the Brown Coats.

Sadly, after space and outdated VHS format. I had to (along with others, toss this perfect Chamber's collection (amongst and touted first off the assembly line) bite the bullet and supposedly pass everything on.

A lot of VHS hasn't been transferred to Digital, indeed. That too should be preserved. Though personally I'm more concerned that the film be preserved first, partially because I think it will benefit more than video when it is transferred to digital, but also because I think it is in the most danger of being lost forever. I see the story of O is on Netflix.
For order or instant!

The Story of O

In a strange, secluded chateau, a woman known only as O (Corinne Clery) is introduced to sadomasochism by her lover: He whips her, chains her and watches her make love to and inflict pain on others. In the process of "proving her love" for him, she gives up everything -- even agreeing to be branded -- to provide him with pleasure. French director Just Jaeckin (Emmanuelle) helmed this adaptation of Pauline Réage's best-selling erotic novel.

Cast:
Corinne Clery, Udo Kier, Anthony Steel, Jean Gaven, Christiane Minazzoli, Martine Kelly, Jean-Pierre Andréani, Gabriel Cattand

It's not that nasty. More like softcore porn, with BDSM. And the storyline is interesting.

So not like the hardcore BDSM that became available in the 1990s and later.
